10 Fast Facts: NED Whisky Tasmania SuperSprint

21 Mar 2022
10 fast facts ahead of this weekend's return to Symmons Plains

1) This year’s event marks the 49th held at Symmons Plains in ATCC/Repco Supercars Championship history, placing it second on the all-time list of rounds held by one venue in the championship’s 63-year history.

2) Garry Jacobson will reach a milestone at Symmons Plains in starting his 100th Repco Supercars Championship race in the opening race of the NED Whisky Tasmania SuperSprint. The PremiAir Racing driver made his championship debut as an Enduro Cup co-driver in 2017 at the Sandown 500, while his best finish in Tasmania is a 19th placing in the opening Sunday race last year.

3) Shane van Gisbergen could potentially move past two fellow Supercars Champions on the all-time championship race wins list this weekend. The reigning series champion’s victory in the opening race of 2022 at Sydney Motorsport Park moved him to 55 career wins, one behind Scott McLaughlin and Garth Tander who are tied for fourth on the all-time list with 56 career wins each.

Van Gisbergen and Whincup won races in 2021

4) Only four drivers on the 2022 Repco Supercars Championship grid have claimed race wins at Symmons Plains: van Gisbergen (4), Will Davison (2), Mark Winterbottom and Chaz Mostert (1 each).

5) Red Bull Ampol Racing has been the dominant force at Symmons Plains for much of the past decade. The team has won 13 of the 17 races held at the circuit since 2014, while its new team principal Jamie Whincup holds the record for the most career wins of any driver at the circuit with 13.

6) Mark Winterbottom is poised to take over the mantle as the most experienced driver at Symmons Plains in ATCC/Supercars history. Saturday’s race will be the 44th of his career at the circuit, tying him with Craig Lowndes and Jason Bright for the most career starts, while Sunday’s races should see the IRWIN Racing driver take the record. Incredibly, Winterbottom has finished all 43 races he has started at Symmons Plains since his first visit in 2004!

7) Brodie Kostecki’s podium result on Sunday at Sydney Motorsport Park leaves the Boost Mobile Racing powered by Erebus driver with four career Supercars podium finishes without a win. Only Murray Carter (20), Alan Hamilton (6), Jason Richards (6; his sole race win came in the era where podiums were determined by round results) and Tomas Mezera (5) have more podiums in championship history without standing on the top step.

8) Symmons Plains was the site of the first Safety Car period in the history of the ATCC/Repco Supercars Championship, which happened during Race 3 in 1997. However, the last seven championship races at the venue have run without intervention from the BP Ultimate Safety Car.

9) The record for the lowest grid position for the winner of a championship race at Symmons Plains in ATCC/Repco Supercars Championship history won’t be beaten this weekend: David Besnard won Race 3 of the 2004 event from 29th on the grid!

10) Broc Feeney and Thomas Randle will make their first Repco Supercars Championship race starts at Symmons Plains this weekend. In fact, it will be the Red Bull Ampol Racing driver’s first race at the Tasmanian circuit in any category! Randle, however, has raced at Symmons Plains previously in the Dunlop Super2 Series and S5000.
