David Reynolds avoids scare to top second Adelaide practice
Team 18 driver avoids crash after big slide at Turn 11 on Friday
Cam Waters, Chaz Mostert, Ryan Wood, Will Brown round out top five
David Reynolds proved his Thursday pace was no fluke with the fastest time in Friday practice at the VAILO Adelaide 500, surviving a wild slide in the process.
The Team 18 driver, who was second on Thursday, led the times in a frantic 30-minute session ahead of Ford trio Cam Waters, Chaz Mostert and Ryan Wood, with championship leader Will Brown fifth.
Reynolds held top spot into the closing minutes before going on with it, only to avoid a big crash in a wild slide through the Turn 11 left-hander.
Reigning champion Brodie Kostecki was sixth, with ring-in teammate Cooper Murray 17th following his whirlwind call-up amid Jack Le Brocq's departure.
The session began in hotter conditions versus Thursday afternoon's session, with Thomas Randle opening proceedings with a 1:20.7534s. Brown (1:20.6594s), Mostert (1:20.4216s) and Matt Payne (1:19.8852s) all went faster, the latter holding down top spot through the opening minutes.
Broc Feeney (1:20.2257s) and James Golding (1:20.0063s) both spent time in second before Wood made it a New Zealand one-two with a 1:20.0028s.
Through 10 minutes, Payne led Wood, Golding, Kostecki, Thursday fast man James Courtney, Feeney, Richie Stanaway, Anton De Pasquale, Cameron Hill and Nick Percat, with Mostert 11th and Brown 13th.
Mostert returned to the track and joined Payne in the 1:19s bracket with a 1:19.9105s, with the 2022 Saturday winner pressing on with the fastest first sector. Reynolds lowered the number to a 1:19.4804s, with Mostert slotting in behind with a 1:19.5827s.
Drivers were testing the limits as the session wore on; Will Davison clipped the tyre barriers exiting Turn 6, with Courtney running long at the Turn 9 hairpin in the final two minutes.
Brown improved to third with a 1:19.8789s with six minutes remaining, before Andre Heimgartner (1:19.8463s) and Bathurst winner Kostecki (1:19.7296s) both jumped the points leader into the final 90 seconds.
Reynolds went on with it, setting the fastest first sector before ruining his lap with his wild slide through Turn 11. Waters, meanwhile, jumped second as the chequered flag unfurled, slotting in just 0.084s behind Reynolds.
Mostert, Wood, Brown, Kostecki, Feeney, Heimgartner, Payne and Hill rounded out the top 10.
Supercars will return on Friday for Boost Mobile Qualifying at 5:30pm/6:00pm AEDT, which will set positions 11 through 24 on the grid for Saturday's Race 23.
