Chaz Mostert sweeps major accolades at 2024 Supercars Gala Awards
Mostert wins Barry Sheene Medal, Drivers’ Driver Award, Jim Richards Award
Wayne Cattach inducted to Hall of Fame, Aaron Cameron named Young Gun
Supercars star Chaz Mostert has cleaned house at the 2024 Supercars Gala Awards, collecting all three major individual awards, while Will Brown has been formally recognised as Supercars champion at Monday night’s event.
Held at the Adelaide Convention Centre, Walkinshaw Andretti United star Mostert was awarded the Barry Sheene Medal, the Drivers’ Driver Award, and the inaugural Jim Richards Award.
It is the second consecutive year Mostert has won the Barry Sheene Medal, awarded to the driver who best exemplifies character, personality, and sportsmanship, as voted on by Supercars accredited media.
Voted on by Supercars drivers in recognition of the performance and sportsmanship of their peers, Mostert was voted Drivers’ Driver for the first time in his career.
In a clean sweep of the night’s major accolades, the Gold Coaster also claimed the inaugural Jim Richards Award, named for the seven-time Bathurst 1000 winner, which recognises drivers’ on-track performance and professionalism.
The Jim Richards Award is the newest addition to the Supercars Gala Awards, and was voted on race-by-race by select competition officials.
Mostert finished third in this year’s Supercars Drivers’ Championship, equalling a career-best. He added three wins to his tally in 2024, one at CARCO.com.au Raceway in Perth before a clean sweep under the lights at the Sydney SuperNight.
A day after officially being crowned 2024 Supercars champion, Will Brown was formally recognised by fellow drivers, teams, and championship stakeholders at the Supercars Gala Awards following his historic run to the 2024 title.
Rising star Aaron Cameron, who finished runner-up in this year's Dunlop Super2 Series, also won the prestigious Mike Kable Young Gun Award.
Also recognised on the night was the induction of the late Wayne Cattach to the Supercars Hall of Fame.
Cattach, who passed away in August, was instrumental in the growth and stability of the championship, particularly at the turn of the millennium and into the 2000s; he went on to also play a crucial role at Dick Johnson Racing into the 2010s.
The awards night capped off an unforgettable 2024 Supercars season that saw eight race winners from seven different teams, a celebrated return to New Zealand with the inaugural Taupō Super400, a new pair of Repco Bathurst 1000 winners in Brodie Kostecki and Todd Hazelwood, and a championship battle that boiled down to the season finale yet again.
Following a break for the holidays, Supercar teams will get back on track in early 2025, with the Sydney 500 set to kick off a highly-anticipated 2025 Repco Supercars Championship season at Sydney Motorsport Park, on February 21-23.
Tickets for the Sydney 500 are available now through Supercars.com and Ticketek.
