Supercars.com is ranking the top 25 drivers since 2000, continuing with Chaz Mostert

As 2025 gets underway, Supercars.com is ranking the top 25 drivers of the last 25 years, continuing with Chaz Mostert, who comes in as our #15.

Before our very eyes, Chaz Mostert could be building a Hall of Fame career, which already boasts two Bathurst wins.

In 2024, Mostert put together arguably his best season yet, dragging an often fumbling Walkinshaw Andretti United to the brink of championship glory. It was exactly why WAU signed him in the first place — win everything.

Mostert was already on the radar by the time he was plucked out of Super2 in 2013 mid-season by Dick Johnson Racing. He was a Formula Ford champion, and fought the likes of Scott McLaughlin, Nick Percat and Scott Pye for the 2012 Super2 title.

Plucked out of Super2 by Dick Johnson Racing, Mostert — aged 21 — took the financially crippled team to victory lane, and arrived at Ford Performance Racing as Ford’s latest young star. A win in Perth and unforgettable Bathurst victory topped off a 2014 campaign full of promise, and as the team took a liking to the FG X Falcon in 2015, he emerged a title hopeful.

He pushed Mark Winterbottom all the way and was looking good, before a horrific Bathurst crash set him back. That accident was a key part of Mostert’s story, but his resilience since then — coupled with his loveable personality — has made him a hit with fans.

The move to WAU in 2020, after six solid seasons with Tickford, was the silly season story to end all stories. He went winless in 2020, but still finished fifth overall, highlighting how he had worked to eliminate errors and find consistency.

Come 2021, and after a win in Tasmania, Mostert and Lee Holdsworth annihilated the field at Mount Panorama. Where he came from behind in 2014, Mostert was the benchmark in 2021, and it seems only a matter of time before he wins again, such is his level of performance in Bathurst.

WAU found even more pace in 2024 and Mostert loomed to win the title, before team errors killed his hopes. However, it was proof that, now 32, Mostert is the full package.

The highlight

Mostert’s biggest days have come on the biggest stage. The 2021 victory was superb, Mostert and Holdsworth controlling the race and surviving a puncture and tactics from Triple Eight to cruise home.

However, it has to be 2014. In arguably the best Bathurst ever, and greatest Supercars race ever run, Mostert will forever remain the winner. Co-driver Paul Morris crashed out early, leaving the odd couple with it all to do. On just his second Bathurst start, Mostert was undeterred by the challenge, and chipped away all day.

When it came to the crunch, Mostert had put himself in position to pounce. Jamie Whincup was fuel poor at the time, not that we knew it, while Craig Lowndes took out Winterbottom. Suddenly, Mostert was second, and as Whincup faltered, he led the lap that mattered most.

Why we picked him

With 24 wins, 98 podiums, 26 poles and two Bathurst wins, Mostert is already one of the greats. Like Cam Waters, it would be sad to see Mostert end up without a championship, but after 2024, it seems a certainty that he’ll one day get there.

Be it 2013 as a rookie, or 2024 as a bonafide star of the sport, Mostert is exhilarating to watch. A flamboyant racer, Mostert would have been successful in any era, and despite being a smiley character off the track, he is a real bastard on it.

He chips away at his rivals like a terrier, gnawing at their heels, and isn’t afraid to rough them up. In his early years, he overstepped the line on a few occasions, and should have more than 24 wins. But that’s all part of his story, and who’s not to say his best is still yet to come?
