Shane van Gisbergen and Jonathon Webb's TEKNO Commodore will start this afternoon's 300km race from ARMOR ALL Pole Position at the Castrol Gold Coast 600.

It's an all Kiwi front row with Scott McLaughlin second, 0.14sec behind van Gisbergen's 1min11.5442 lap in the Top 10 Shootout.

Van Gisbergen's lap was wild but fast, and enough to knock the Volvo off the top spot for this afternoon's race around the concrete canyon after a quick last sector.

It's the TEKNO racer's first pole and front row start for the season at a circuit he loves and won at last year.

"It was a bit wild - the first sector pretty good but went a bit hard into the chicanes, flew pretty high," van Gisbergen said.

"It was good fun - you want to get out of the mess in this race. Hopefully Jonno does a good job and we can get a surfboard ... the car's been awesome all weekend."

Van Gisbergen was the last on track after recording the fastest lap in this morning's qualifying session.

McLaughlin praised his rival's driving and is pleased to start from the front row.

"He did a bloody good job, I gave it everything I could," the Volvo driver said.

"I was having so much fun out of there it was right on the line ... it'll be a good race."

Mark Winterbottom and Rick Kelly were third and fourth for the session. Winterbottom and Craig Lowndes were the big winners, both making three positions on their qualifying order.

Those who went the other way were Jamie Whincup - who left nothing on the table and finished the lap with a bent mirror - and Tim Slade. The Red Bull Commodore lost five spots finishing seventh, and Slade four to finish ninth.

His Walkinshaw Racing teammate Garth Tander was 10th.

The race will begin at 2.30pm local tie (3.30pm AEST) and Whincup and van Gisbergen have both indicated their co-drivers will start the race.
