Will Davison is armed with another chance to edge closer to famous boss Dick Johnson.

A hallmark of Davison’s 2022 campaign has been one-lap pace, with the veteran taking six ARMOR ALL Poles.

With five rounds and 11 races remaining, Davison has ample time to undercut his previous season-high tally of eight, set in 2012.

Cam Waters leads the fight for the ARMOR ALL Pole Champion Award with seven.

Waters matched and surpassed Davison when he swept the Sunday poles at the OTR SuperSprint.

Davison currently has 25 poles to his name, with his most recent pole in Darwin drawing him level with John Bowe.

Three more and Davison will draw level with Johnson, who took 28 pole positions in his decorated career.

Davison surpassed Johnson's podiums tally of 64 earlier this year, and now sits level with Chaz Mostert on 74.

Scott McLaughlin leads the way for Johnson team poles with 59.

Davison, a two-time Bathurst winner, hasn't been the only driver on the move in the pole stakes.

Points leader Shane van Gisbergen moved past Mark Skaife into fifth all-time at the NTI Townsville 500.

Anton De Pasquale and David Reynolds are now level with Colin Bond, with Waters two behind Ford legend Marcos Ambrose.

Davison will have his hands full should he try to edge closer to Johnson at Sandown next week.

Waters leads the way on seven poles in 2022

Waters took Ford's last Sandown pole in 2017, the year he went on to win the enduro with Richie Stanaway.

Bowe took the last Sandown pole by a Johnson Ford in 1998.

Mostert and van Gisbergen shared the Sandown poles last March, the latter winning all three races.

That's not to say Davison doesn't know how to qualify at Sandown; he took pole for both 2009 sprints and the 2013 enduro.

Drivers will tackle three sprint races at the Penrite Oil Sandown SuperSprint next weekend.

Tickets for the event are on sale now.
