Chaz Mostert was “gutted” to fall agonisingly short of a Race 27 podium amid a stronger weekend for Walkinshaw Andretti United.

Mostert picked up finishes of 11th, fourth and eighth in the three races at the BP Ultimate Sydney SuperNight.

The results were favourable on paper, but Mostert went backwards in races, having qualified sixth, sixth and fifth.

It was Sunday’s first race which saw Mostert drive into podium contention, only to be mugged on the line by Shane van Gisbergen.

Van Gisbergen pipped Mostert to the final spot on the Race 27 podium by 0.0072s.

Mostert, who was man of the match the previous weekend with a stunning drive from 26th to third, admitted the narrow defeat stung.

However, the WAU ace was pleased he could bring home a top 10 in the finale having taken two tyres at his stop.

“A bit gutted with the earlier race today,” Mostert said after Sunday’s action.

“Just missed out by a podium by, I don’t even know what time it was, it was very small.

“We did our best to hang onto eighth by taking two tyres in the last race.”

Mostert was on track for a top five in Saturday’s race before a late-race Safety Car, trigged by teammate Bryce Fullwood, left him vulnerable to attack from those behind.

He spent his tyres in Race 27 and overhauled Will Davison, but lost out to van Gisbergen in dramatic circumstances.

Despite missing out on a trophy, and with an eye on Tuesday’s test day, Mostert paid tribute to his team for finding speed in his qualifying car.

“A fantastic job by the team this weekend to create a good balance and a much better qualifying car,” he continued.

“But we’re still just missing something.

“Testing this week, which we’re happy about, we saved our biccies to the end of the year. A lot of things to go through.

“The guys have some great ideas, so we’ll look to put our best foot forward for the last round."

The 2021 Repco Supercars Championship will resume this weekend at the Beaurepaires Sydney SuperNight.

Every session of the event will be broadcast live on Foxtel (Fox Sports 506) and streamed on Kayo.

The Seven Network will provide live free to air coverage of the event.
