Nick Percat has signed up for this year’s PAWGUST to raise funds for Guide Dogs Australia.

In the effort to support the costs associated with breeding, raising and training Guide Dogs, the Brad Jones Racing driver will take part in the challenge throughout August.

Percat along with his chocolate Labrador Nelson, will be raising funds for Guide Dogs Australia, seeing them walk 60 minutes a day from August 1.

It’s a cause close to the 32-year-old’s heart, who is an ambassador for the charity.

“We love walking our dogs and being outside with them anyway, but PAWGUST encourages us to walk every day and raise money while doing it,” Percat told Supercars.com.

“While we are on a break from racing, it’s good to be able to help a good organisation and give back to some people who are struggling a bit.”

Guide Dogs Australia reports its costs in excess of $50,000 to breed, raise and train one new guide dog in Australia.

The fitness and fundraising event hopes to improve the physical and mental health of owners and their pets, with more than 11,000 people already participating.

By taking part in the PAWGUST challenge, Percat hopes to raise vital funds so anyone that needs a Guide Dog will have one.

It comes after the 2011 Bathurst winner commissioned a custom-made helmet in February, featuring painted paw prints from two Labradors, with proceeds from its auction going to Guide Dogs Victoria.

Percat who relocated to the Gold Coast from Albury last month, admitted Nelson has been enjoying his new home.

“So far it’s going well, Nelson’s actually quite buggered, he’s not used to the warmer climate up here,” Percat said.

“The long walk along the beach he is enjoying but he doesn’t do much for the rest of the day once he’s been for his hour or so walk.”

Already raising more than $1,700 towards his $5,000 goal, the pair have already clocked up 607 minutes of walking, nine days into the month-long challenge.

The initiative has received over $1,000,000 in donations so far from its aptly named ‘PAWsome supPAWters’.
