Victory for Chaz Mostert in Sydney ends remarkable six-year streak

Victory for Chaz Mostert at the Beaurepaires Sydney SuperNight has ended a remarkable six-year streak.

Mostert raced to victory in the thrilling rain-affected Race 2 on Sunday.

It marks the first time Mostert, who finished third on Saturday, has led the championship in his career.

It also ends almost six years of Triple Eight and Dick Johnson Racing dominance atop the top of the standings.

Over 160 races have passed since a non-Triple Eight or DJR driver led the championship.

Then driving for Prodrive, which is now Tickford, Mark Winterbottom left the fifth round of 2016 atop the standings.

Winterbottom was the reigning champion at the time, and led Scott McLaughlin by 27 points.

Even then, McLaughlin was racing a Volvo for Garry Rogers Motorsport; Jamie Whincup was nine points further behind in third.

From there, Whincup and Shane van Gisbergen led the points for Triple Eight, and McLaughlin for DJR Team Penske.

The 2016 season ended with van Gisbergen as champion, although the year featured a number of surprise points leaders.

Notably, Michael Caruso led the championship after the opening round in Adelaide, Will Davison for Tekno Autosports and McLaughlin.

Whincup, van Gisbergen, McLaughlin and Fabian Coulthard all led for a time in 2017.

McLaughlin led for the balance of 2018, although Whincup and van Gisbergen both led at times.

McLaughlin led the entire 2019 campaign and the majority of 2020, before van Gisbergen led from start to finish last year.

For Mostert, leading the championship for the first time in his 262-race career marks a "pretty cool" moment.

"I never thought I'd have an orange number on my car," said Mostert, who finished third on Saturday.

"Driving up and seeing this [championship leader] board is pretty cool.

"It's cool to tick that box off the list... I don't know where to start. What a race, what a weekend for us.

"Super stoked for the whole team."
