Triple Eight take on Surf Rescue

The Red Bull Ampol Racing Team tackled a different kind of racing at Surfer’s Paradise on Wednesday, taking on local Surf Life Savers in the ultimate beach challenge.

Just three days out from the Boost Mobile Gold Coast 500, Jamie Whincup, Shane van Gisbergen and Broc Feeney met with kids from Surf Life Saving Australia to take on the King of the Mountain versus King of the Beach showdown.

The Supercars trio faced off against local nippers, completing paddle board, tug of war, and capture the flag races.

Top 5 to watch on the Gold Coast

Triple Eight boss Whincup was the first to face off against the locals, testing his surfing skills aboard a paddle board.

The seven-time champion, who lived on the Gold Coast for 15 years, admitted he wasn’t overly confident in his water skills.

"There's not gonna be much competition," Whincup said.

"We're going to give a crack, we're going to compete, get out in the surf, and have some fun.

"I've spent 15 years on the Gold Coast, I'm now Brisbane-bound, but I love to surf.

"Once the wind gets up I love getting out there, so I'm looking forward to taking on the Surf Lifesaving kids."

Despite displaying an enormous effort in the surf, Whincup was unable to beat the nippers across the line.

Van Gisbergen fronted up for the tug of war against four youngsters on Surfers Paradise beach, with the championship leader losing the first heat.

Whincup joined to even up the numbers, but the duo was unable to overthrow the hometown team.

Gold Coast-born Feeney was the last Bull to duel with the nippers, testing his reactions and speed on the sand.

"I'm gonna get absolutely smoked by the little kids," Feeney said before the race.

"But that's alright. Hopefully, I save one piece.

"Today, it feels like it's starting to happen, we're down on the beach and the race track is a kilometre away, so it's starting to feel real this week.

"I've got so much support here on the coast, which is gonna be awesome."

Surviving the first three heats of capture the flag, the rookie took the race down to the wire, fittingly facing off against his third cousin in the finale.

The 20-year-old, who visited his former school yesterday, threw everything at victory for the Banyo-based squad, diving across the line to claim the last flag.

Feeney’s triumph saw the final tally at two wins to one in favour of the Surf Lifesavers.

Championship leader Van Gisbergen heads into the Boost Mobile Gold Coast 500 with a 567-point lead over Cam Waters.

Cars will hit the track for Practice 1 at 12:35pm local time/1:35pm AEDT on Friday.

The Boost Mobile Gold Coast 500 will be held 28-30 October and broadcast live on Fox Sports and the Seven Network.
