Waters scores pole double at The Bend

Cam Waters is in the box seat to add to his two Tailem Bend wins after scoring a Sunday pole double.

Waters claimed his sixth and seventh ARMOR ALL Pole Positions of the season in Tailem Bend.

The 27-year-old added to wildcard teammate Zak Best's shock Saturday pole to complete a Tickford sweep.

Waters will start Race 22 alongside teammate Thomas Randle, and Race 23 alongside Anton De Pasquale.

Mustangs now have 18 poles from 23 attempts this season, but only five wins from 21 starts.

Waters now leads the charge for the ARMOR ALL Pole Champion Award, surpassing Will Davison's tally of six.

It was a difficult morning for Davison, who qualified 23rd and 10th for the two races.

“It's awesome, the car's really nice today,” said Waters, who battled to fourth on Saturday.

“It’s a lot better than yesterday. Still not perfect, but it can't be that bad.

"Today, it's easier to drive. Yesterday, it was a bit on edge.

"The guys did a great job overnight."

Points leader Shane van Gisbergen, who won on Saturday, will launch from third for both races.

Cars rolled out following an overnight tyre reallocation, but Tickford again proved the team to beat over one lap.

Van Gisbergen set the early pace in the first session on a 1:48.776s.

'It's awesome, the car's really nice today'

Waters, who is celebrating his 100th round, clocked a 1:48.348s, with Randle impressing to second on a 1:48.425s.

Randle, who reached his maiden Shootout in Townsville, was just 0.07s away from a shock pole.

James Courtney made it three Tickford Mustangs in the top four, and backed it up with fifth in the following session.

Waters returned in the second session and dipped straight into the 1:48.3s.

De Pasquale, who qualified fifth for Race 22, was just 0.03s from Waters' benchmark.

Van Gisbergen was within a tenth of Waters' time, with Broc Feeney fourth ahead of Courtney.

Best, after being 16th in the first session, again proved his speed was no fluke with seventh.

David Reynolds was the major scalp of the Race 23 session, the Penrite Racing driver 27th and last.

Scott Pye will start his 300th race, Sunday's first sprint, from 21st position.

The OTR SuperSprint will conclude with Race 22 at 12:30pm local time, followed by Race 23 at 3:40pm.

Van Gisbergen leads the drivers' championship by 323 points.

Red Bull Ampol Racing leads the teams' championship by 31 points.
