Doohan locked in for Eseries wildcard

The famous Doohan name will join the BP Supercars All Stars Eseries grid for Round 5 in a Red Bull Holden wildcard entry.

Rising open-wheel racing talent Jack Doohan, the son of Australian Moto GP legend Mick Doohan, has been confirmed to drive a #33 Commodore – just as Red Bull Formula 1 star Max Verstappen had done last month.

Doohan is just 17 years of age and still in Year 12, born the same year that seven-time Supercars champion Jamie Whincup made his full-time debut.

He becomes the youngest driver to feature in the Eseries and is looking forward to testing himself against the best in the business via the virtual iRacing platform.

“I’m really looking forward to joining the Red Bull Holden team for the night,” Doohan said.

“The race is at Spa which is one of my favourite circuits and a new challenge driving a V8 Supercar so it’s going to be an awesome night.

“I’ve done quite a bit of iRacing with Shane [van Gisbergen] just in hosted online races, it’s been great to be able race with him and obviously he will be really quick in the Eseries like he is in all our online races, so hopefully I can get in some practice and get up to speed.

“Previously at Spa I finished on the podium in Euroformula last year which was quite a good weekend, the long straights and the tight Sector 2 makes for some great racing and it’s one of my favourite tracks.”

A member of the Red Bull Junior Team, Doohan won a hat-trick of races at Sepang in February during the F3 Asian Championship, and likely would have won the overall title but for a pair of punctures when he was leading the first two races in the Thailand season finale.

Doohan was due to begin the FIA Formula 3 Championship with team HWA RACELAB at the Bahrain Grand Prix in March before the F1 season was postponed.

Currently residing at his family home on the Gold Coast, his Eseries rivals on Wednesday night will include childhood friend Zane Goddard, who played a key role in getting Doohan into racing.

Doohan raced BMX until the age of five, but after breaking his leg he put racing aside until taking up go-karts in 2011, inspired by the Matt Stone Racing rookie, who used to drive a kart at the Doohan property.

Doohan Sr won five straight Moto GP titles from 1994-98.

The Fox Sports broadcast for Round 5 will begin with qualifying at Wednesday 6pm AEST; racing will start from 7pm, also shown live on Kayo, Sky Sports NZ and 10 Play, as well as Supercars’ Facebook page.
