While his season is on hold as he awaits calendar confirmations, 2020 is still shaping as a successful one for the 26-year old.

After racing at the season opening Superloop Adelaide 500, he leads the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship with one win and one second place finish from the only two races held this year.

Online, in the space of a week he has racked up three impressive victories to lead two international competitions.

Last Sunday he celebrated his first victory in the online Indycar Series on a virtual Alabama circuit against a full field of ex-Formula 1 and current IndyCar drivers.

He backed that up with two wins out of the opening three races of the BP All Stars Eseries against the full suite of Supercars drivers.

Tomorrow he is chasing win number four in a week, when he rises at 2:50am to contest the third instalment of the IndyCar iRacing Challenge this weekend at Michigan International Speedway.

Speaking on the Marshall Pruett Podcast, McLaughlin said the shift to online racing has helped keep him focussed.

“I think it’s been really good for my mindset because … not that I’ve pushed anything away, but I’m just doing the best with what I’ve got right now,” the Shell V-Power Ford ace said.

“I’m trying to put myself in the best possible position to win races in iRacing and that’s by working hard and getting up early and all that sort of stuff.”

McLaughlin was set to make his IndyCar debut in the GMR Grand Prix at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on May 1-3. That event has since been postponed to July 2-4.

Regarding any future racing overseas, McLaughlin will wait for any revised Supercars calendar before committing to a hectic schedule.

“I’ve got to align the calendar up with the Supercars calendar and the IndyCar calendar, which at the end of the day Supercars for me comes first, that’s my main championship.

“If there’s any clashes with any IndyCar races, well, I’m done. If there’s no clashes… Supercars haven’t put their calendar out yet, so we can’t [make a decision].“I’m happy to take a backseat for a little bit and just be happy that I’ve got a job and happy that I’m living my dream.”

McLaughlin will contest the second round of the BP Supercars All Stars Eseries which will begin at 7pm AEST on Wednesday 15th April and will be broadcast on Fox Sports 506, Kayo, 10 Play and Sky Sports (NZ) as well as online via Supercars’ Facebook Page and Supercars’ Teams Facebook Pages.
