Feeney edges towards Super2 title with Bathurst win

Broc Feeney has edged towards the 2021 crown after racing from pole to victory at Mount Panorama.

Feeney will carry a 147-point lead over MW Motorsport driver Jayden Ojeda into Saturday’s season finale.

The 19-year-old needs only to finish on Saturday to secure the 2021 Dunlop Series title.

Only Ojeda can beat Feeney to the title; however, with 150 points on offer for the winner, Ojeda must win and hope Feeney fails to finish.

Feeney’s previous closest challenger Zak Best finished fourth; being 159 points behind Feeney, Best is out of title contention.

Feeney was assured in his run to victory, with the race going time certain following two BP Ultimate Safety Car deployments.

The teenager, who will also race in this weekend’s Repco Bathurst 1000, led every lap of the 15-lap race.

The Safety Car was deployed on lap 3 after Super3 driver David Murphy beached himself in the Murray’s Corner sandtrap.

Fellow Super3 driver Paul Boschart was turned into the McPhillamy sand on the first green lap back by Zane Morse.

Morse was handed a drive-through penalty over the incident, which triggered the second Safety Car.

The drama didn’t stop; Ojeda cleared Jordan Boys after the second restart, which ensured Feeney couldn’t clinch the title.

On lap 9, Jaylyn Robotham’s robust defence encouraged a dive at Griffin’s Bend from Matt Payne.

Robotham was sent into the tyre barriers, and Payne was hit with a drive-through for his troubles.

By lap 11, Feeney was 1.5s to the good over Ojeda, with Boys dropping from the rear of the Jayco Altima.

Feeney crossed the line 2.4s to claim another win in what is proving to be an historic campaign.

The Queenslander can become the youngest ever Super2 title winner, and first teen to win the title since Scott McLaughlin in 2012.

Tyler Everingham, Aaron Seton, Matt McLean, Josh Fife, Tim Blanchard and Matt Chahda rounded out the top 10.

Nash Morris clinched the Super3 points lead with 13th overall.
