Broc Feeney says he had to act quickly on Chaz Mostert if he was to secure a second career podium.
Feeney overhauled Mostert in the closing laps to clinch the final spot on the Race 26 podium.
The rookie scored his first podium since Race 4 in Tasmania, some five months ago.
Feeney had gone 21 races without a podium, but had managed to hold onto a top six position in the championship.
The podium could have come sooner, even as soon as a few hours.
Feeney was in the podium hunt in Sunday's earlier race before he fell out of contention due to a slow stop.
The teenager managed to drag his #88 Red Bull Ampol Commodore to 10th.
“It’s been such a hard weekend,” he said.
“We’ve been quick all weekend, but got turned in race one and made a mistake when battling for the podium.
“To come from ninth to here, that’s one of the most enjoyable races I’ve had.
“It’s been a long time since I’ve been back here, so to get this and finish it off, it’s a good weekend.”
It came after he was sent into a spin by Andre Heimgartner at Turn 9 on Saturday.
It was at that corner that Feeney's podium hopes came alive in Sunday's finale.
Cam Waters surfed through the sand chasing Mostert for third.
Feeney closed on Mostert and made the pass down the pit straight in front of the packed grandstand.
The 2021 Super2 champion explained he had to get the pass done before he ate through his tyres.
“When I saw Cam and Chaz together, I thought I might get a podium,” he said.
“Obviously Cam made a mistake and speared off, and Chaz was struggling.
“I knew as soon as I got to him, I had to get him before my tyres overheated.
“I got it done, they were some nervous last few laps."
Feeney has retained sixth in the points heading to Pukekohe.
