Jamie Whincup rubbishes conspiracy theories over dramatic clash
Broc Feeney hit Chaz Mostert, coincidentally helping Will Brown win
Mostert finished second, Feeney seventh after penalties
Jamie Whincup has shut down "keyboard warrior" conspiracy theories that Triple Eight Race Engineering used one car to benefit the other in Sunday's VAILO Adelaide 500 finale.
Triple Eight driver Broc Feeney challenged Walkinshaw Andretti United rival Chaz Mostert for victory in Sunday's Race 24, which was won by Feeney's teammate Will Brown.
Feeney picked up a 15-second penalty over an unsafe release after his second stop, but caught and hounded Mostert home in the final stint.
A lunge at Turn 6 by Feeney sent Mostert into the wall, with the WAU Ford sustaining damage. Feeney picked up an additional 15-second penalty, while Brown closed in and passed Mostert with 12 laps to go.
Feeney crossed the line first but was demoted to seventh, with Brown, Mostert and Thomas Randle completing the podium.
Speaking after the race, Triple Eight boss Whincup poured water over any theories that Feeney was used to help Brown, and undo Mostert's race.
"Broc's weekend was about qualifying as well as possible and winning both races to try to finish this year off," Whincup said in the press conference.
"We made a little error on the first pit stop and put Broc under a bit of pressure there, and then tried to make up for it in the second stop and we dropped a bit late and made a second error. So, he needed to get up the road as much as possible.
"I'm sure there will be keyboard warriors thinking it was team orders and all that sorts of carry on, but I can assure you there wasn't.
"He was just trying to get past Chas and get up the road and unfortunately it didn't happen, so that's the end of ths story."
Feeney apologised to Mostert over the clash, while the WAU driver admitted he was "blind" after losing his right-side mirror.
"I wanted to make it as hard as possible. I didn't have the right end mirror at that point. And I'm like, I don't think he's really that far up, but, I was kind of blind there," Mostert said.
"It happens. I hope it was entertaining for everyone. Had to drive a three-tyre car back across the line. I thought I was going to have to pit, but it was pretty bad."
Regardless, Brown was a revelation on a day he was turned around on lap 9, dropping to 22nd.
"That's why we've got two cars; so if one car bombs out, we've got another one," Whincup added.
"Lucky enough, 87 was extremely quick, come through and got the chocolates."
