The session began in drama for Super3 driver David Murphy, who spun exiting The Cutting.
Aaron Seton later ran off at Hell Corner, but quickly rejoined.
However, the session came to a halt when Brendan Strong suffered a major crash at Turn 2.
The session was suspended for over 20 minutes as officials extracted Strong’s car and repaired the barriers.
Replays showed Strong hitting the Griffin’s Bend barriers at pace.
At the other end of the circuit, James Masterton buried his car into the Murray’s Corner sand.
The session time certain was extended to make up for lost minutes.
At the time of the red flag, Tyler Everingham led the way on a 2:07.999s.
Practice 1 fast manCameron Hill vaulted to the top, albeit by 0.002s, with Declan Fraser 0.03s behind his teammate.
The times tumbled, and McLean soared to top spot with a 2:07.103s, albeit by 0.02s over Everingham.
Seconds later, McLean’s Eggleston Motorsport teammate Crick buried his car at The Chase.
The session was again suspended, with Crick’s car narrowly missing a large puddle in the sand trap.
The session did not resume, gifting McLean Thursday honours.
Hill ended up third ahead of Zak Best and Fraser, with Angelo Mouzouris sixth.
Matt Payne, Thomas Maxwell, Reef McCarthy and Jay Hanson rounded out the top 10.
Cars will return to the track for Race 1 qualifying at 9:20am local time on Friday.
