Broc Feeney winless in six rounds since June's Darwin round
Triple Eight driver had five wins in first 12 races, now winless in next 10
Feeney won 2022 Adelaide 500, finished second last year
June 16 seems a long time ago. In the case of Broc Feeney, it is, given his 10-race, six-round winless streak going into the biggest weekend of his career.
Championship leader Will Brown, third-placed Chaz Mostert, fourth-placed Cam Waters and even fifth-placed Matt Payne have won at least one race since Feeney swept June’s Darwin round.
Feeney heads into this weekend’s title decider in Adelaide 180 points behind Triple Eight Race Engineering teammate Brown with 300 points left to win.
At the time of his last victory, in Darwin 151 days ago, Feeney would have been hopeful of a 10-plus win season. Through 12 races, Feeney had five wins to Brown’s three, with four other drivers on one win each.
Instead, since Darwin, six different drivers — the aforementioned drivers, along with Brodie Kostecki and Nick Percat — have all raced to victory lane as Feeney has watched on, something not lost on the 22-year-old.
"I love [Adelaide], I’ve always really enjoyed the track layout. In saying that, it’s a pretty daunting place, but it’s got a lot of character to it,” Feeney said.
"You’re pretty proud when you do a good lap at Adelaide. So, 78 laps in the two races, it’s going to be a fun, but hard race.
"And it’s a great place to wrap up the championship, but really, I just want to stand on the top step again because it’s been a while.”
While Brown’s closest challenger in 2024, it hasn’t been an easy season for Feeney, who has lost swags of points in races since Darwin to let his teammate off the hook.
Feeney insists it's not over until it's over, but Brown has a chance to clinch the crown on Saturday, even if the #88 takes the chequered flag first.
“I’m excited to go back to Adelaide. It’s been a really happy hunting ground for me. I got my first win there in 2022,” said Feeney, who has an impressive 5.1 average finish, behind Brown's 4.0.
"The effort that’s gone in the last few years to get the event to where it is now has been huge, and this year is going to be the biggest yet, so I’m pumped.
"The championship is going down to the wire. It’s certainly a long shot for me, but my goal is to get the Adelaide 500 trophy back here at home.”
Brown and Feeney will commence their quests to clinch the 2024 Repco Supercars Championship at the VAILO Adelaide 500 on Thursday November 14. Tickets are on sale now.
