Reynolds details Bathurst heartbreak

Watching on helplessly as his Bathurst ended on lap 5 was a “terrible feeling” for David Reynolds.

Reynolds arrives on the Gold Coast off the back of his first Bathurst DNF since 2014.

The 2017 winner’s race ended on lap 5 after co-driver Matt Campbell was involved in an incident.

Campbell hit Zane Goddard, who lost control running through The Chase.

The incident left Penrite Racing to repair the heavily-damaged #26, with Tickford Racing reverting to a spare chassis.

James Courtney and Andre Heimgartner also missed out on a drive in the race.

It was the first time since 2008 that Reynolds didn’t turn a racing lap at Mount Panorama.

That came when Rick Kelly slotted into his seat after a practice crash for Paul Radisich.

A year earlier, Reynolds also missed out after co-driver Cameron McConville ground to a halt on the warm-up lap.

Reynolds compared that 2007 heartbreak to what he suffered a fortnight ago.

“My weekend was looking okay,” Reynolds told the latest Penrite Preview.

"We didn’t make the most of it [in qualifying] and we ended up 18th, and that set us up for a shit run.

“Matt got caught in a crash that had nothing to do with him, he was just a bystander.

“It destroyed the car and put us out of the race on lap 5.

“I haven’t had that feeling since I first started in 2007, when we were out on the warm-up lap.

“It’s a terrible feeling, and shit to watch.”

Reynolds managed to retain seventh in points heading to Surfers Paradise, where he won his very first race in 2013.

He still holds the qualifying lap record, also set in 2013.

“It’s one of the best tracks we go to,” Reynolds said of the Surfers Paradise Street Circuit.

“It’s honestly the hardest, mentally taxing tracks we go to.

“You don't get a rest; you have one small stuff-up, and you’re in the fence hard.

“You’re constantly concentrating, the car’s always moving around.

“It’s just a nuts track, I love it, can’t wait."
