Matt Payne has been stripped of pole position for the Dunlop Series opener at Sandown.

Payne snatched pole away from Tyler Everingham for Saturday's race with a last-gasp flyer.

However, Payne set his time with Matt McLean buried in the Turn 9 sand trap.

He crossed the line mere seconds before red flags flew, and appeared to have secured pole.

It would have been Payne's fourth pole in seven attempts this season.

Payne was found to have set the fastest sector under yellow flag conditions.

The Kiwi teen has been hit with a three-spot grid penalty, and will start fourth for the race.

Everingham has inherited pole, and will share the front row with Tickford Racing's Zak Best.

Matt Chahda has been promoted from fourth to third, and will start alongside Payne.

It is Everingham's first pole of the season, with the MW Motorsport youngster becoming the fourth driver to score a pole in 2022.

It is also Everingham's first career Super2 pole, and the first for his team this season.

The 22-lap Race 1 will commence at 3:25pm local time on Saturday.
