Wood passes Allen to sweep Perth round

Ryan Wood has benefited from an attack on Kai Allen late in Race 2 to claim Dunlop Series honours at the Bosch Power Tools Perth SuperSprint.

Wood, who won Race 1 on Saturday, raced past pole-sitter Allen into Turn 7 after a second Safety Car period.

Allen led the majority of the race, but bowled a wide at Turn 1 when Wood went down the inside, and finished fourth.

The Safety Car was called after pole-sitter Brad Vaughan was turned into the Turn 1 wall by Wood's teammate Zach Bates.

It ensured Wood swept the round, with Perth local Aaron Love and Brad Jones Racing’s Lochie Dalton completing the podium.

It was the first overall podium finishes in Super2 for all three drivers.

Zak Best finished seventh, and will take a 48-point lead over Cooper Murray to Townsville in July.

"It's huge not only for me, but all my supporters, family, they've sacrificed everything for me," the Kiwi teen said.

"Unfortunately they couldn't be here this weekend, but it's pretty emotional.

"I just can't thank everyone at Walkinshaw Andretti United enough, and for them to believe in me like this."

Allen beat Vaughan off the line, with the latter adjudged to have jumped the start.

Vaughan raced on with a five-second penalty hanging over him, but kept Allen within reach.

With 20 minutes remaining, an errant wheel off Ryan Gilroy's Super3 VF Commodore triggered the first Safety Car, bringing Vaughan back to Allen.

On the restart, Wood cleared Vaughan at Turn 6, leaving the Tickford Racing rookie vulnerable to attack from behind.

At Turn 1, Vaughan defended from Bates, who cut across and hit the rear of the #5 Mustang.

Vaughan was sent into the concrete wall and into retirement, forcing a second Safety Car deployment.

On the restart, Wood pounced on Allen and went down the inside at Turn 1, with the latter running wide onto the apron.

It allowed Bates, Love and Murray through, although Bates was handed a drive-through penalty over the Vaughan incident.

Wood raced away to victory by 3.8091s, with Love, Murray, Allen and Dalton rounding out the top five.

Cameron McLeod claimed Super3 honours ahead of Jobe Stewart and Jett Johnson.

The 2023 Dunlop Series will resume at the NTI Townsville 500 on July 7-9.
