Toyota GR Cup frontrunner Max Geoghegan has been announced as the latest addition to the Erebus Academy.
Geoghegan will sport Erebus branding on his helmet from the next GR Cup round supporting the Penrite Oil Sandown 500, the third round of five for the 2024 GR Cup.
Aligning with the Erebus Academy is a big step for the highly touted Geoghegan, who has starred this season in the rebranded Toyota Gazoo Racing Australia GR Cup.
Geoghegan currently sits third in the GR Cup points standings, having finished second in the previous round in Sydney behind WAU Academy prospect Matthew Hillyer.
“I’m excited to join Erebus Academy,” said the young Sydneysider.
“Seeing the incredible talent that has been nurtured here, I know it’s the perfect place for me to start my journey and grow alongside the Academy.
“The Erebus Academy has a strong track record of success, and I’m eager to contribute to that, not only in this year’s 86 series but also in what lies ahead.”
Erebus Motorsport CEO Barry Ryan also welcomed the news, saying that Geoghegan has caught the eye of several people within the industry with his performances.
“Max Geoghegan is a young driver I’ve been keeping an eye on for the past year or two, and his progress in the Toyota 86 series has been impressive,” said Ryan.
“Max’s dedication to improving his skills has been recognised not only by me but also by Paul Morris at Norwell Motorplex and other instructors there, who speak highly of Max’s talent and potential both on and off the track.”
The latest addition adds to what is a junior program already stacked with talent, including both reigning Super3 champion Jobe Stewart and Jarrod Hughes in the Super2 Series.
Fellow Erebus Academy driver Bailey Sweeny is also set to make his Super3 debut at Bathurst in October, whilst current Supercars Championship leader Will Brown is also an academy graduate.
Signing with Erebus now puts Geoghegan on the path to continuing his family’s legacy in the Supercars Championship, following in the footsteps of legendary grandfather Ian ‘Pete’ Geoghegan.
Pete Geoghegan was the first driver to win five Australian Touring Car Championships in 1964, 1966, 1967, 1968, and 1969, and was one of two inaugural Supercars Hall of Fame inductees in 1999 alongside Allan Moffat.
His mark of five championship wins has only been matched or surpassed by Dick Johnson, Mark Skaife, and Jamie Whincup.
