Schedule released for 60th anniversary Penrite Oil Sandown 500

Session times for the 2024 Penrite Oil Sandown 500 have been confirmed, as the Repco Supercars Championship prepares for a milestone running of the popular endurance race in Melbourne.

This year marks the 60th anniversary of the inaugural Sandown enduro, a six-hour touring car race held in 1964, won by Ralph Sach and Roberto Bussinello in an Alfa Romeo TI Super.

The 2024 edition of ‘the 500’ will also be the 50th endurance race held at the historic Sandown International Raceway, which again serves as the first endurance race of the 2024 Supercars season.

Last year’s event saw Triple Eight Race Engineering duo Broc Feeney and Jamie Whincup hold off a charging Brodie Kostecki and David Russell to take victory.

It was Feeney’s endurance race win, while Whincup collected his sixth Sandown 500 win, tying fellow greats Allan Moffat and Craig Lowndes for second all-time, to Peter Brock’s nine Sandown victories.

The Supercars grid will swell to 26 entries at Sandown with the addition of wildcard entries from Triple Eight and Matt Chahda Motorsport, with at least four drivers scheduled to make their main game Supercars debuts.

Supercars will hold five critical practice sessions across Friday and Saturday ahead of Boost Mobile Qualifying, with the Boost Mobile Top Ten Shootout scheduled to set the grid for Sunday’s 161-lap race.

The rising stars of Supercars will be well represented on the Sandown 500 grid, with no fewer than eight Dunlop Series drivers set to compete as co-drivers or wildcards in the main race.

To celebrate the milestone event, several historic-focused initiatives are in planning to showcase Sandown’s storied motorsport heritage, with details to be announced in the coming weeks.

The Dunlop Series will also hold its fourth event of 2024 at Sandown, joined by a bumper support category line-up including fellow fan favourites in Porsche Carrera Cup, Touing Car Masters, and Toyota GAZOO Racing Australia GR Cup.

On-track action at the 60th anniversary Penrite Oil Sandown 500 begins Friday September 13, with the 500-kilometre fan favourite endurance race scheduled to begin at 2:05pm on Sunday September 15.
