Two 40-minute sprint races on the streets of Adelaide are set to crown the 2024 Dunlop Super2 Series champion.
Zach Bates, Aaron Cameron, and Kai Allen are separated by just 42 points after a Repco Bathurst 1000 weekend that blew the title race wide open.
Whilst Bates claimed a fifth and a fourth to move into the series lead, there were tales of woe for Cameron and Allen.
Whilst Cameron claimed a crushing lights-to-flag win on Saturday, a power steering failure whilst running second on Friday cost him a shot at the points lead, meanwhile Allen had his toughest weekend in Super2 highlighted by two crashes.
Now all eyes turn to the streets of Adelaide, and with the margins so fine between the top three, performing when it matters most will be paramount.
Ahead of the VAILO Adelaide 500, Supercars.com takes a look at how the three Super2 title contenders have performed on street circuits in the past.
Street circuit performance
The numbers alone suggest that the reigning champion could be the one they're all chasing this weekend in Adelaide. Across the past two seasons, Allen has picked up two victories and a further two podiums, with an outstanding average finish of 3.4, with Cameron next best at 8.25, though he only has four street circuit starts to his name. Despite two podiums in the past two street circuit events at Townsville and last year's decider in Adelaide, Bates has the lowest average finish of the trio at 9.0. Qualifying could also be a concern for Cameron, who starts outside the top 10 on average each time he starts a street circuit race.
Bates | Cameron | Allen | |
---|---|---|---|
Starts | 8 | 4 | 8 |
Poles | 1 | 0 | 1 |
Best start | 1st | 9th | 1st |
Average start | 7.5 | 11.5 | 5.0 |
Wins | 0 | 0 | 2 |
Best finish | 2nd | 2nd | 1st |
Average finish | 9.0 | 8.25 | 3.4 |
What does this mean for points?
With 300 points on offer, Allen's average points per street circuit event is outstanding at 252.75, and comfortably clear of both Cameron and Bates. When you combine average round points (rounded) for a street circuit event with the current Super2 standings, the reigning champion is projected to create history as the first back-to-back Dunlop Super2 Series champion, turning around the Bathurst nightmare. Bates and Cameron would both stay in the mix for a shot at the title, however Cameron's deficit grows by 26 points and the current series leader would have a projected 71 point swing against him.
Bates | Cameron | Allen | |
---|---|---|---|
Total points won | 717 | 369 | 1011 |
Average per round | 179.25 | 184.5 | 252.75 |
Current points | 1137 | 1098 | 1095 |

How much can we read into the form guide?
Whilst it can be easy to get caught up in the numbers, a lot has changed in the Dunlop Series since the last street race in Townsville. Bates' Race 6 podium was the beginning of a still unbroken run of top five finishes that have seen him take the points lead, whilst his last two street circuit events have been his strongest. Meanwhile, Cameron hasn't yet fired a shot on a street circuit, with his Townsville podium coming off the back of surviving the lap one chaos in Race 5. However, if his Kelly Racing Mustang is just as fast as it was in Bathurst, then there is no reason he can't be in the fight either. Allen has also admitted that the most important component of his weekend will be qualifying, having only had one top five start in the past four races, and two in the past six. The Dunlop Series is always unpredictable, and when you put them on an unforgiving street circuit with championship glory on the line, anything can happen.
