Will Brown has below-par track record on the Gold Coast
Brown 204 points ahead of Broc Feeney in championship standings
Chaz Mostert and Cam Waters well positioned to capitalise on any Red Bull misfortune
If recent history is anything to go by, this weekend's Boost Mobile Gold Coast 500 could provide yet another twist in the 2024 Repco Supercars Championship.
Although championship leader Will Brown has a comfortable 204 point lead over Red Bull Ampol Racing teammate Broc Feeney, he will be looking to shake a scrappy record at Surfers Paradise.
In four starts on the Gold Coast as a solo driver, the Toowoomba resident is yet to score a top 10 finish, with a trio of 11th place finishes in the last three races on the Gold Coast his best result.
However, this year will be his first Boost Mobile Gold Coast 500 at Triple Eight, who have a trademark impeccable record at Surfers Paradise, having won 16 of the last 36 official races (with the Sunday race in 2018 a non-result).
If Brown's record at Surfers Paradise is disappointing, then Feeney's record isn't much better, with a best qualifying result of 11th in 2022 and a best race result of eighth last year.
The struggles of the Red Bull pair could play perfectly into the hands of renowned street course kings Chaz Mostert and Cam Waters, who need a little but of luck if they are to play back into realistic title contention.
Indeed, if either of the Red Bull drivers qualify in the midfield this weekend, the risk of damage in the opening laps is only amplified by the tight confines of the Surfers Paradise Street Circuit.
Should such a situation occur in either of the two races, then Mostert and Waters are likely to be well positioned to capitalise from a championship perspective.
Mostert enters the Boost Mobile Gold Coast 500 third in points, 225 points behind Brown after a disappointing enduro campaign saw him drop behind Feeney in the standings.
However, Mostert has a great record in Surfers Paradise, recording race wins in 2017 and 2018 at Tickford in the event's former Gold Coast 600 enduro guise.
Mostert had a great weekend in 2022 for his first Gold Coast event with Walkinshaw Andretti United, walking away with two podium finishes, whilst last year he could only muster eighth and 13th in the two races.
Waters' recent record at the Gold Coast mirrors Mostert's, with two top 10s in 2022 followed by a win and a third last year, with his Saturday win following a supreme defensive drive from a rampant Shane van Gisbergen.
At 464 points off Brown, Waters needs a similar or better weekend than he had 12 months ago, and also needs Brown at least to strike dramas through the weekend.
If Waters is more than 300 points off the championship lead at the end of the weekend, he will be ruled out of title contention heading into the VAILO Adelaide 500.
On track action at the Boost Mobile Gold Coast 500 begins on Friday with two 40-minute practice sessions. Tickets for the event are on sale now.
