Broc Feeney flies from 20th to seventh in impressive Race 10 fightback
Strong race strategy makes up for disastrous qualifying gamble
Feeney now 61 points behind leader Will Brown, but slips to fourth behind Matt Payne
Broc Feeney has kept his Repco Sprint Cup aspirations alive following a stunning charge from 20th on the grid to seventh in Race 10 at the ITM Taupō Super 440.
After a strategic blunder from Red Bull Ampol Racing qualifying saw Feeney a shock elimination from the first segment of three-part qualifying, however Feeney made sure he wasn't going to stay in 20th.
By the end of the first lap, the #88 Camaro had already climbed to 17th, and on Lap 15 Feeney had climbed his way back inside the top 10 by virtue of some pit stops ahead of him.
It soon became apparent that Triple Eight had a strategy ace up their sleeve for the 22-year-old, as the team ran Feeney for 25 of the 61 laps before he made his first stop, pitting from the lead.
Feeney emerged back in 15th, but had two shorter tyre stints to the finish, pitting for the final time on Lap 44, and putting his tyre advantage to good use.
10th at the beginning of his final stint, Feeney quickly worked his way to seventh, and put serious pressure on Andre Heimgartner for sixth in the closing laps, eventually settling for seventh.
After a torrid weekend up to the final race of the weekend, the 2023 Sandown 500 winner was relieved to cap off the weekend with a strong drive, gaining valuable points on Will Brown and Cam Waters in the standings.
"It was heaps of fun. It was probably one of the most enjoyable races I've certainly had in a long time, maybe in my Supercars career, to come from 20th to seventh and get so close to fifth in the end," said Feeney.
"Huge credit to the team for digging deep and not dropping the bottom lip today after qualifying. It was obviously a pretty tough start to the day and, you know, we can't keep having bad results, so to come back and realistically close the championship gap in that last race was awesome.
"If we could obviously start the weekend with the car that we ended with, I think we'd be able to fight for wins. But that's racing. We'll learn from it. "That race was really good. Had to get my elbows out, there was lots of fun. I've been lucky enough to be up the grid and haven't actually had to witness it but being in the pack, it was pretty wild.
"It's pretty crazy and you can see when you pass someone if you touch them, if you touch them at all, they try and get you back in the next corner. So I had some awesome battles out there.
"There's a lot of guys that race really respectably. There's some that make it harder than others and some that aren't happy with how you do it. But anyway, I thought I had a good race against all the guys out there, it was just a fun race."
The 2025 Repco Supercars Championship continues at the Snowy River Caravans Tasmania Super 440 from May 9-11. Tickets for the event are on sale now.
