Twice in as many days has the pole-sitter been beaten to Turn 1
  • Broc Feeney laments costly second startline defeat in Melbourne

  • Feeney beaten to Turn 1 by Cameron Hill, Will Brown on consecutive days

  • Feeney trails Brown, who starts 21st on Sunday, by 10 points in Perkins Trophy race

Broc Feeney has lamented being unable convert pole position to the lead for a second day running at the MSS Security Melbourne SuperSprint.

The Triple Eight Race Engineering driver finished second behind teammate Will Brown in Saturday’s Race 6 at Albert Park.

Brown inflicted the same treatment on Feeney as Cameron Hill did on Friday, outdragging the #88 Red Bull Ampol Chevrolet on the run to Turn 1.

Just as Hill did, Brown got down the inside and completed the move through the first turn, before Nick Percat managed to muscle past Feeney for second after the first Safety Car restart.

Feeney got back past Percat on the second Safety Car restart, but speaking after the race, Feeney knew his chances of winning had been shot from the start.

“I think I overcompensated a little bit from yesterday on the start,” he said.

"I got a bit of wheelspin yesterday so I tried to adjust for that and just bogged, but I think Will got a cracking start. From there I knew it was going to be really hard to win the race.

"Obviously, we're in a similar position the other day, but just got caught out on the restart.”

Percat survived a late power steering scare to finish third, leaving Brown and Feeney clear out in front to clinch Triple Eight’s 50th one-two finish in Supercars.

Feeney admitted he needed to put on a big move on Percat to stand a chance of beating Brown, who had to settle for second on Thursday after trailing Feeney through Turn 1.

On this occasion, the cards fell the way of the reigning champion. Regardless, Feeney is still in the box seat to overturn Brown’s 10-point Larry Perkins Trophy lead on Sunday, given Brown will start 21st.

“We were probably all saving maybe a bit too much tyre life and Nick was really fast in the last couple corners, so he got me,” Feeney said.

"I was just lucky to be able to get him back there at the end. I had to make a pretty big move to get him down into Turn 1 and then from there it was pretty much my race.

"I think the car was good, Will was fast, I was fast. Whoever's going to be out, front's going to win, but for me, tomorrow's the day where I'll make my points back.”

The Melbourne Supercars action will conclude with Race 7 at 10:25am local time on Sunday.
