Chaz Mostert cops time penalty over James Golding incident
WAU star sent Golding's PremiAir Camaro into Turn 11 gravel on lap 1
Mostert initially finished seventh, Golding 23rd and a lap down
Chaz Mostert has been penalised over his role in the incident that saw James Golding sent into the gravel trap on lap 1 of Saturday's race in Melbourne.
The Walkinshaw Andretti United driver crossed the line in seventh on Saturday, with reigning champion Will Brown leading a Triple Eight Race Engineering one-two.
On the first lap, Mostert careened into Golding's #31 PremiAir Chevrolet at Turn 11 on the opening lap, with Ryan Wood and Cooper Murray in close proximity behind.
Mostert and Murray both locked up, with the former running down the inside and tagging Golding into a spin.
Golding was beached, triggering a Safety Car period, while Mostert's #25 Mobil 1 Optus Ford sustained cosmetic front end damage.
Mostert finished just 7.1s from winner Brown, while Golding finished a lap down in 23rd,
Officials ruled that the incident would be investigated after the race, with Mostert later hit with a 30-second time penalty for careless driving.
The penalty will drop Mostert from seventh to 22nd in the provisional race classification, pending further ongoing investigations.
Incidents under investigation at the time of publication also included the Macauley Jones/Cooper Murray clash that saw the latter taken out of the race, along with the Murray/Matt Payne Turn 1 incident, and David Reynolds/Thomas Randle Turn 4 clash.
The points are also provisional at the time of publication, but Mostert will drop from 102 to 135 points behind Brown.
Meanwhile, the penalty elevates erstwhile championship leader Cam Waters from ninth to eighth, bringing the Tickford Racing driver seven points behind Brown heading into Sunday.
The Melbourne Supercars action will conclude on Sunday with Race 7 at 10:25am local time.
