Supercars, ChristchurchNZ release statements
ChristchurchNZ has submitted bid to host Supercars
Christchurch is home to Ruapuna Motorsport Park
Supercars and ChristchurchNZ have released statements regarding the championship in New Zealand.
The Repco Supercars Championship will return to New Zealand this weekend for the ITM Taupō Super 440. Tickets for the April 11-13 event are on sale now.
Supercars made its long-awaited return to New Zealand in 2024 at the inaugural Taupō event at Taupō International Motorsport Park, which sold out of grandstand and general admission tickets weeks in advance.
The Taupō Supercars event is contracted through 2026.
ChristchurchNZ confirmed Wednesday that it has submitted a bid to host the championship. South Island city Christchurch is home to Euromarque Motorsport Park, colloquially known as Ruapuna, which is owned and operated by the Canterbury Car Club.
A ChristchurchNZ statement reads:
Christchurch has submitted a bid to host the Supercars Championship and we look forward to hearing official notice from Supercars on their preferred venue.
Along with the Canterbury Car Club, we hope for a positive outcome to be announced in the near future.
Supercars confirmed in December that there has been great interest among stakeholders and supporters in a second Supercars event in New Zealand.
In a statement also published Wednesday, Supercars said:
New Zealand boasts a passionate motorsport following, highlighted by the support for this week’s second running of the ITM Taupō Super 440.
There’s clear enthusiasm from fans and stakeholders around the idea of a second event in Aotearoa.
While those conversations remain ongoing, we will continue to explore what opportunities are available to us.
Our immediate focus remains on building the momentum and to deliver another incredible event in Taupō this weekend.
Track action in Taupō will commence on Friday with two practice sessions.
