  • Broc Feeney goes four from four as Will Brown, Chaz Mostert come to blows

  • Feeney dips under lap record en route to weekend sweep of Melbourne poles

  • Mostert catches Brown late in second session; Brown 18th, Mostert last

Broc Feeney has swept the Boost Mobile Poles at the MSS Security Melbourne SuperSprint on a Saturday morning headlined by an incident for championship contenders Will Brown and Chaz Mostert.

Held in the coolest and fastest conditions of the weekend so far, Feeney powered to Race 6 pole with a record 1:46.1369s lap, before backing it up with a 1:46.2383s in the Race 7 session.

The Thursday race winner will share the Race 6 front row with Brown, with Friday winner Cameron Hill carrying on his impressive form with second in the second session.

Brown and Mostert were the centre of attention in the second session, however, after a close call at the Turn 8 sweeper. Mostert appeared to catch Brown, with the two cars making minor contact.

Mostert was unable to set a competitive time and ended up 24th and last after the incident, with Brown 18th and later slapped with a three-place grid penalty.

Points leader Cam Waters will start Saturday's race from 19th, before improving to fifth for the finale. Erebus Motorsport rookie Cooper Murray was an impressive third in the Race 7 session ahead of Richie Stanaway.

Race 6 will commence at 5:40pm local time on Saturday afternoon.

Race 6 qualifying

Brown opened proceedings with a 1:47.6314s, ahead of Feeney (1:47.6630s) and Ryan Wood (1:47.9827s). Brodie Kostecki (1:47.8846s) and Will Davison (1:47.6686s) then held down third, before Murray (1:47.4401s) and Jack Le Brocq (1:47.6055s) both jumped up.

Nick Percat (1:47.0343s) and Hill (1:47.1598s) then formed a Matt Stone Racing one-two ahead of the final runs, with Murray, Le Brocq, Brown, Feeney, Davison, Kostecki, Wood and Kai Allen the 10. Waters was 11th, and Mostert 12th.

To the final runs, Stanaway, Aaron Cameron, David Reynolds, Anton De Pasquale, Andre Heimgartner, Bryce Fullwood, Jaxon Evans, Macauley Jones and James Golding hadn't set a lap. Cars returned to the track with three minutes remaining, and De Pasquale was first into the 1:46s with a 1:46.9701s.

However, De Pasquale's time was only good enough for 12th, as Feeney and Brown went below the practice/qualifying lap record. Payne, Percat, Murray, Davison, Golding, Hill, Wood and Kostecki rounded out the top 10.

Mostert ended up 11th ahead of De Pasquale, with Le Brocq only 18th ahead of Waters, who was stung over track limits at Turn 10. Cameron, meanwhile, ran off at Turn 1 and ended up 24th.

Race 7 qualifying

After a brief break, cars returned for the eight-minute Race 7 session.

Waters dropped in a 1:46.4974s, before Feeney lowered the number to a 1:49.2383s. Murray vaulted to second with a 1:46.4351s, before Hill powered to P2 with a 1:46.3592s.

Brown opted for a second warm-up lap, and sat 24th and last behind Mostert. Brown was only good enough for 18th with a 1:46.9896s, while Mostert grazed the wall at the Turn 8 sweeper.

Mostert went on with it and caught Brown at the same point of the circuit. Mostert was forced to brake and made slight contact with the rear of Brown's car, and Mostert remonstrating in the cockpit. Brown was later penalised to the tune of three grid positions.

"It's bloody awesome to get four of these this weekend," the 22-year-old said.

"I was a bit more stressed on that last run, I had a bit of a mistake at Turn 1, and really focused on finishing the end of the lap.

"I'm stoked, four out of four poles here this weekend unreal so I just can't thank my team enough. It's the hard work we've been putting in over the off-season that's for sure.

"It didn't quite pay off at Sydney, and now my job here is to try and convert it into wins."
