Will Brown tips 'argy-bargy' Supercars action in Taupō
Supercars champ expects Grand Prix action tipped to spill over into Taupō
Track action commences with practice on Friday
Will Brown believes there will be plenty of “argy-bargy” on the slower parts of the Taupō circuit in Supercars’ return to New Zealand.
Racing rules have been in spotlight so far this season, with Sydney and Melbourne headlined by wild, exciting racing and plenty of door-to-door action.
Taupō International Motorsport Park is set to be the latest circuit to be hit by blockbuster touring car chaos, courtesy of tight and twisty corners.
Notably, Brown looked to Sector 1 of the 3.32km circuit — which has a series of left and right corners — to be at the centre of the weekend's action.
“I think the smaller track will mean more argy-bargy style racing,” Brown said.
“There’s less road to put your car on and make moves, which makes for tough racing regardless.
“I’m looking forward to that again, but we don’t really know until we get there. It’s a slower track so I think everyone will get their shoulders out to try and get past.”
It was in the first sector where Brown launched a successful attack on Triple Eight teammate Broc Feeney to win last year's Sunday race. Brown and Feeney went head-to-head in a thrilling battle, with the former coming out on top.
The circuit itself has several different track surfaces, with drivers to contest Saturday's Super 440 action on Dunlop's Soft and Super Soft tyre compounds.
Feeney expects tyre degradation to be a big talking point, saying: “It’s a very hectic and full-on track. Driving one lap around there is very high intensity. It’s an exciting race because of that.
“It’s probably our highest level of degradation for tyres throughout the full season and throws a lot of challenges at you. I think the racing is generated a lot by the tyre degradation in Taupō and I think we’ll see that once again this year.
“Looking at the track, you’d think it’s nearly impossible to pass, but the tyre degradation is so huge there that it just makes so many opportunities.
“So, I think everyone’s going to be driving at a lesser intensity than they were in Melbourne, but there’s still going to be some great racing."
