Will Brown benefits from late Broc Feeney mistake in Race 5
Triple Eight teammates changed positions in closing laps on Friday
Brown 38 points ahead of Feeney in drivers' standings
A late mistake for Broc Feeney proved key for Will Brown to snatch a fourth podium in five starts this season.
Triple Eight Race Engineering driver Feeney held third behind Matt Stone Racing teammates Cameron Hill and Nick Percat late in Race 5, with Brown trailing.
With five minutes remaining in the time certain race, Feeney ran slightly wide at the final corner, allowing the reigning champion to get a run on the pole-sitter.
The move was done by the time the field reached Turn 1, with Brown ultimately beating Feeney home by 0.4347s.
“Broc made a bit of a mistake coming onto the main straight,” Brown said after the race.
“So really I just drove past him, it wasn’t really a pass."
Brown leads the race head-to-head over Feeney 3-2 and has four podiums to Feeney's two, despite Feeney leading the qualifying head-to-head 5-0.
Feeney rued a botched start and failed attempt to retake the lead, which led Percat past.
“I just got wheel spin off the start. Then I tried to make a move on Cam, but Nick got through,” Feeney said.
"But congrats to those guys. Great job from them. Obviously, most of the race was under Safety Car, but also probably first time for me following a car this weekend.
"So, I think if we would've got out front, we would've been fine. But following, I certainly struggled. “For us, disappointing that we couldn't convert, but we'll try again tomorrow. I think quality-wise we've been really strong all weekend.
"We've tried a few things over the last couple of days, but I think qualifying is just about limiting your mistakes. But everyone's going to be faster in qualifying in the morning, so we’ve still got to be better.”
Cars will return to the track on Saturday morning for dual Boost Mobile Qualifying sessions from 9:05am local time, with Race 6 to commence at 5:40pm.
