  • Inaugural Christchurch Supercars event takes place this weekend

  • Friday race added to Christchurch schedule to replace cancelled race in Taupō

  • Wellington’s Ryan Wood scored a popular home win on Saturday in Taupō

It is once again Supercars race week in New Zealand, as the second leg of the ITM New Zealand Double Header nears.

The Repco Supercars Championship heads south to Christchurch this weekend following a historic event in Taupō this past weekend.

22-year old Kiwi Ryan Wood won Saturday’s 200-kilometre race in Taupō, his first on home soil and a sensational first win for Toyota in just its ninth Supercars race.

The Championship now turns its attention to Ruapuna Raceway, which will host Supercars for the very first time this weekend, and now has a Friday race included in the event program.

The impending arrival of Cyclone Vaianu led event organisers to cancel Sunday’s running in Taupō, meaning a 120-kilometre Supercars race was cut from the event.

Interestingly, it was Wood’s idea to reschedule the cancelled race for Friday in Christchurch, originally Friday would only contain two 25-minute Supercars practice sessions.

It means Supercars will hold a total of four races this weekend at Ruapuna: one 120-kilometre race on Friday, two 120-kilometre races on Saturday, and one 200-kilometre race on Sunday.

Brodie Kostecki leaves Taupō with the championship lead over Broc Feeney and reigning Bathurst 1000-winning Kiwi Matt Payne.

The driver who scores the most points across the Taupō and Christchurch events will be awarded the Jason Richards Memorial Trophy, named for beloved Kiwi driver Jason Richards who succumbed to cancer in 2011.

Wood currently leads Feeney in the battle for the JR Trophy, with four races to go to determine this year’s winner. Live coverage of the ITM Christchurch Super 440 can be found on Kayo and Foxtel in Australia, and Sky Sport in New Zealand.

Tickets and corporate hospitality options for Supercars’ inaugural event on the South Island of New Zealand can be found via Supercars.com and Ticketek NZ.
