Quinn hospitalised after Carrera Cup crash

Veteran racer Tony Quinn has been hospitalised after a heavy accident in Townsville.

Quinn crashed on the opening lap at the high-speed Turn 10 during the Porsche Paynter Dixon Carrera Cup Australia opener.

The 64-year-old was the only driver involved in the incident.

He was transported to Townsville University Hospital after he was extricated from the car.

A Porsche statement provided an update on Quinn's condition, revealing a suspected broken leg, fractures to his ribs and a punctured lung.

"During Race 1 in Townsville on 09 July 2022 at 12:45pm an incident occurred on the opening laps in which driver, Tony Quinn, was injured," the statement reads.

"On lap one Quinn’s car made contact with the wall on the outside of Turn 10. No other car was involved in the accident.

"Quinn was transported to Townsville University Hospital, where he is being treated by medical staff.

"Initial medical checks of Quinn have identified a suspected broken leg and fractures to his ribs on the left hand side.

"It is also suspected he has a punctured lung.

"Doctors are currently awaiting results of scans an X-rays.

"According to the medical staff at the hospital, Quinn is in a stable condition and will remain under observation in hospital."

Luke Youlden went on to win the shortened race.

Carrera Cup drivers will return for Races 2 and 3 of the weekend on Sunday 8:30am and 12:45pm local time.
