Unbreakable? Whincup's epic Tassie record

23 Mar 2022
Jamie Whincup won a staggering 13 races at Symmons Plains

Jamie Whincup's retirement means Symmons Plains will be without its most successful driver this weekend.

The NED Whisky Tasmania SuperSprint will be the first Symmons Plains event since 2004 without Whincup on the grid.

Triple Eight's new boss was a cut above at the Launceston venue, winning a staggering 13 races.

Whincup took career win. No. 123 last April, which proved to be his penultimate solo race win.

Of active drivers, Shane van Gisbergen's four Symmons wins are the most of all drivers on the 2022 grid.

Whincup first won in Tasmania in 2007

To put Whincup's remarkable Symmons tally into perspective, just four active drivers have won a combined eight races.

Will Davison won in 2012 and 2016, Mark Winterbottom in 2010, and Chaz Mostert last year.

Triple Eight-built cars have won 23 of the last 33 races at the 2.41km circuit, which will host its 49th ATCC/Supercars round.

It will take beyond 50 rounds for a driver to get near Whincup's 13 wins, with van Gisbergen the obvious candidate.

Van Gisbergen, however, has never before won multiple races on a Symmons weekend; his four wins came in 2016, 2017, 2019 and 2021.

Sunday success in 2009

Whincup, meanwhile, won multiple races on the same Symmons weekend four times.

The seven-time champion is also the all-time winner in Townsville, New Zealand, Surfers Paradise and Adelaide.

A record will be broken this weekend, with the Tim Slade Mustang to record the most ever race starts.
