Will Brown spent nearly 54% of all race laps in the top three in 2024
Triple Eight driver had 79% podium hit-rate, scored 83.8% of all points on offer
Brown the first in seven years to win title with fewer wins than rival
New Supercars champion Will Brown was a revelation in 2024, and a closer look at his race performance proves why his consistency was key to his title victory.
Brown didn't win the most races, with his haul of five pipped by teammate Broc Feeney's six. Brown also didn't lead the most laps; in fact, four drivers led more laps in 2024 than Brown.
Feeney led the way with 279 laps led, ahead of Chaz Mostert (247), Cam Waters (244) and Brodie Kostecki (243), who led the Bathurst 1000 and Gold Coast finale almost start to finish.
Brown led 180 laps, or 12% of the season's 1494 laps. However, the Triple Eight Race Engineering driver spent 800 laps in the top three, 54%.
Brown only spent one race, the Townsville finale, outside the top three positions. On that occasion, Brown finished 24th and last after colliding with David Reynolds on the opening lap.
The Queenslander's charges to the podium featured some wire-to-wire performances, and also some blockbuster runs home. In six races, Brown finished on the podium despite running fourth or lower for more than 50% of the race.
Notably, he scored a podium in Perth despite sitting third or higher for 11 of the race's 55 laps, and repeated the feat in Townsville with just nine of 88 laps in the top three.
While claiming just five of the year's 24 wins, Brown also scored 83.8% of all points on offer in 2024.
In the 300-point era since 2008, only van Gisbergen (87.5% in 2022), Scott McLaughlin (86% in 2019, 85.9% in 2020) and Whincup (85.8% in 2012) scored a higher percentage of points in a season.
Brown's podium finish hit-rate in 2024 – 19 from 24 starts – is 79.2%, with the 26-year-old becoming the first driver since Dick Johnson in 1984 to claim a podium finish at every round of a season.
Brown's 79.2% podium hit-rate is the third best since podiums were recognised for all races, behind Jamie Whincup (80% in 2012) and Shane van Gisbergen (79.4% in 2022).
