‘Baby steps’ for Mostert at WAU

Chaz Mostert declared his first full test day with Walkinshaw Andretti United as ‘really productive’, but is refusing to set any expectations for Adelaide.

After much build-up, including a brief shakedown last week, the former Ford driver finally got down to business in his new Commodore at the BP Ultimate SuperTest.

Sharing the car with co-driver Warren Luff, Mostert ended up seventh on the official timesheet.

There was much to learn, with Mostert's team change coinciding with the introduction of a new category-wide shock absorber, as well as aero and engine tweaks.

“There have been so many changes in the off-season; it still feels like a Supercar to me,” Mostert said when asked to compare his new ride to the Tickford Mustang.

“Power is down this year a little bit on last year [due to revised engine rules], you can feel that, getting used to the new damper package is quite unique as well.

“There’s still so much to take in at the moment to really see where it was [compared to] last year.”

Asked if he has a better understanding of what can be achieved with the team this year following the test, Mostert said: “No, not really. It’s just baby steps.

“For me, mentally I’m happier, the team is really welcoming me so I’m excited to go racing and that’s probably the bigger thing I take out of today.

“They’re keen to move forward so we’ll see how we go in the coming rounds and keep moving forward; baby steps, no expectations, just keep working on the problems.

“We’re building a base at the moment and like with any new team you’re building a little problems list and you’re trying to tick the boxes.”

Mostert stressed the importance of taking engineer Adam De Borre across from Tickford to WAU, as they try to improve the package together.

WAU scored just a single podium last year, with both its drivers outside the top 10 in the final standings.

“[De Borre] knows what my driver profile is and it’s weaknesses and strengths and what I really require from the car to try to be fast,” he said.

“I’m very lucky to have him in my corner and the guys and girls here at WAU too, they’ve been so welcoming, it’s pretty overwhelming to be honest.”

Mostert’s new teammate Bryce Fullwood ended his first day with WAU at the foot of the timesheet, but declared it a “pretty good day” regardless.

“We got through most of what we wanted, learnt a lot, and I got comfortable in the car, and sorted out all the ergonomics side of things, which is always important,” he said.

“I’m glad I only have to wait a couple of days to jump back in and have a steer, really looking forward to Adelaide now and opening the season.”

Kurt Kostecki also spent time aboard the #2 Commodore during the day, following confirmation he’ll co-drive with Fullwood in the PIRTEK Enduro Cup.
