The Super2 title race took a major turn this morning when Kai Allen had a sizeable crash at Reid Park in the closing minutes of this morning's Boost Mobile Qualifying session at Bathurst.

Eggleston Motorsport is in a race against time to get the #1 Coca-Cola Commodore back on track for Race 9 of the season at 3:20pm this afternoon.

The car went into the concrete heavily with the front left corner, and also took a big hit with the left rear, with Eggleston mechanics working feverishly on the car as soon as it returned to the paddock.

As of time of publication, there are three-and-ahalf hours until the start of the race this afternoon, which could prove to flip the championship script.

A non-start for Allen would be disastrous, with his 126-point advantage over Zach Bates at serious risk.

Should he start, Allen will start 15th after having fastest time deleted for bringing out the red flag, having been fifth at the time of his accident.

However, Bates couldn't make the most of Allen's misfortune, as he had a right rear tyre failure on his final run, leaving him 13th on the grid behind Super3 pole-sitter Thomas Maxwell.

The biggest winner is shaping up to be Kelly Racing's Aaron Cameron, who entered the weekend third in points, 144 behind Allen.

Cameron qualified 5th in the session topped by Tickford's Brad Vaughan, and could make serious inroads into both Allen and Bates ahead of him in this afternoon's 40-minute race.

Race 9 of the 2024 Dunlop Series begins at 3:20pm AEDT.
