Cody Gillis was a standout performer on Saturday in the Dunlop Series in Perth, qualifying and finishing in fourth place in a breakout performance for the rookie.

The Wollongong native’s day was set up by a blistering lap time set in the first segment of Boost Mobile Qualifying, a time that held strong even in the theoretically faster second segment.

“Yeah obviously qualifying is pretty important around here, so it was good to just put an entire lap together,” Gillis told the broadcast on Sunday morning.

“We were struggling to put it all together in practice, so I just went out there and sent it and it paid off, only problem is I’ve got to do it again today.”

Gillis’ performance comes as BJR welcomed backing from Western Australian company Vibe Petroleum this weekend, sporting branding from brands such as Powerade and Allen’s Lollies on a striking blue and black livery.

The branding from the latter includes the famous Allen’s snakes adorning the rear quarter panels of the #9 Commodore ZB, a feature that has quickly become a favourite of the Gillis family.

“My nephews back home, as soon as they saw the car they were all pretty ecstatic about it,” the former karting star said.

“It’s great to have Powerade, Vibe, and also Allen’s Lollies onboard this weekend as well.”

Talking at the Dunlop Series signing session held on Sunday morning, Gillis praised the strong turnout from West Australian race fans.

“Yeah it’s good to be looked up to, me and Elliott [Cleary] were talking about it before, it’s hard to do the same signature twice sometimes but we’re doing it more and more so we’re getting there,” Gillis quipped.

Gillis and teammate Cleary will be looking to build on BJR’s strong Saturday in the Dunlop Series in Boost Mobile Qualifying for Race 2 later today, beginning at 11:05am AWST/1:05pm AEST.
