News of Will Brown formally replacing Shane van Gisbergen at Triple Eight has painted a clearer picture of the 2024 Repco Supercars Championship grid.
The Triple Eight news, announced Tuesday, is one part of what has proven an unpredictable silly season.
As the 2023 championship is fiercely fought on track, an ever-intriguing silly season has continued to provide curveballs and unexpected headlines.
There are several seats up for grabs as drivers fall off contract, with current, former and uncapped drivers linked to teams.
Notably, the destinations of the likes of Cam Waters, James Courtney, David Reynolds, Nick Percat, Jack Le Brocq and Scott Pye haven’t been formally announced.
Remarkably, of all 11 teams, only Triple Eight and Dick Johnson Racing — with Anton De Pasquale and Will Davison — have confirmed their 2024 line-ups.
Brown leaves Erebus despite being a winner in 2023
Triple Eight will go into 2024 with a tweaked line-up, with Brown joining Broc Feeney, who is staying on for a third season.
Brown's Triple Eight arrival leaves a prized vacancy at Erebus alongside current championship leader Brodie Kostecki. Recent reports have linked Le Brocq and Courtney to the seat, with Super2 rookie Cooper Murray also in the discussion.
Chaz Mostert and Andre Heimgartner will stay with Walkinshaw Andretti United and Brad Jones Racing, but the outlook of their teammates is still unclear.
Bryce Fullwood has impressed in 2023, with Jack Smith and Macauley Jones offering stability to BJR. As for WAU, Percat is set to be replaced by either Fabian Coulthard or Ryan Wood.
BJR and Tickford Racing are the only four-car teams on the grid, with Tickford’s line-up — and structure — yet to be confirmed. Waters emerged as a silly season wildcard earlier this year, but is now expected to stay.
Mark Winterbottom signed a new Team 18 deal last year, with Scott Pye off contract. It emerged over the Sydney weekend that Reynolds, off contract with Penrite Racing, could join the Mount Waverley squad.
Reynolds joined the Grove squad in 2021
Should Reynolds depart, there will be another key vacancy alongside Matt Payne at Penrite Racing.
With several leading stars also off contract, the team could pull a similar move to 2022 when it signed Lee Holdsworth for a season before looking long-term.
Nulon Racing is unlikely to play a role in the driver market given team owner Peter Xiberras is impressed by incumbents Tim Slade and James Golding, leaving Matt Stone Racing and the Blanchard Racing Team.
Le Brocq helped MSR to victory lane at Hidden Valley in June, with rookie Cameron Hill joining this year. Team owner Matt Stone has maintained his satisfaction with both drivers, could be forced to make at least one change.
BRT, which debuted as a one-car team in 2021, could also look different in 2024 as it chases ambition of a two-car model. Todd Hazelwood is off contract, and should BRT expand, the Box Hill squad has Aaron Love on its books in its Super2 car.
Love will also get a taste of the main game in this year’s enduros as he shares a BRT wildcard Ford with the returning Jake Kostecki.
The 2023 season will resume at this weekend's OTR SuperSprint. Tickets are on sale now.
