David Reynolds snuck into Shootout after engine issue
Reynolds had one lap to score passage into Shootout
Team 18 driver suffered Shootout puncture on Saturday
David Reynolds cut a relieved figure after securing passage into the Boost Mobile Top Ten Shootout, after an engine issue kept him in the garage.
Team 18 was forced into frantic repairs on the #20 TRADIE Beer Chevrolet as cars rolled out for Boost Mobile Qualifying at the Thrifty Bathurst 500.
The last-minute fix ensured Reynolds had one lap to get into the Shootout, and he delivered, setting the fifth fastest time.
It came a day after Reynolds was unable to set a Shootout lap after he picked up a right-rear tyre puncture, before racing to eighth on his Team 18 debut.
Speaking after the session, Reynolds said he was under pressure to deliver, given he set his fast lap on his second effort on Saturday.
“It was a pretty high pressure situation because we had an engine fault,” Reynolds said.
"They didn't know what it was, and they replaced a couple of leads and it sort of come and gone in the last run. So, you know, I literally had one lap to do it.
"And normally yesterday I was doing it on my second lap, so that was in the back of my head, trying to warm my tyres up.
"I've worked really hard on it since we got here. We've made heaps of good changes and Crusty’s [Race Engineer Richard Hollway] done an amazing job. And so has the team.
“I'm stoked to be in the Shootout again."
Reynolds was “beside himself” to get into the Shootout, with Red Bull Ampol Racing teammates Broc Feeney and Will Brown to be last out in the one-lap dash.
“They weren't really sure it was going to fix itself, but it sort of did,” he continued.
“It gives me confidence. But, you know, I've got to do it again in the Shootout, I've only done one lap, so I don't know.
"I don't want to read too much into it, but I don't know whether my tyres are up, and there's lots going on… but I’m just beside myself to do that lap."
The Boost Mobile Top Ten Shootout will commence at 12:05pm AEDT.
