Wild Gold Coast Saturday "not great, not bad" for Will Brown
Brown fought back to seventh after crashing in qualifying
Brown leads Broc Feeney by 171 points, Chaz Mostert 243 down
Will Brown has reflected on a "tough" day at the Boost Mobile Gold Coast 500, which saw Triple Eight teammate Broc Feeney claw back points in the championship chase.
Brown can still clinch the 2024 Repco Supercars Championship on Sunday, but will need other results to go his way in Race 22.
The points leader put himself under immense pressure after crashing late in qualifying, putting Brown in grid slot 11 for Saturday afternoon's race.
Brown ultimately fought back to seventh, but rued getting stuck behind Team 18 driver David Reynolds for the final stint. Brown was within a second of Reynolds for the run home, but couldn't get by.
In response, Feeney scored a maiden Gold Coast podium, taking 33 points away from Brown. As it stands, Brown leads Feeney by 171 points, with Chaz Mostert 243 behind after being stung by a gear position sensor issue.
Brown can clinch the crown with a win or second place on Sunday, should Feeney fail to finish and Mostert finish at the back of the top 10.
“It was a tough day for us today. I screwed up in qualifying on a good lap which meant we unfortunately didn’t get into the Shootout," the Queenslander said.
"In the race, unfortunately we got stuck behind Reynolds on strategy and couldn’t really get past him. The car wasn’t too bad, but we just didn’t have enough pace to drive through the field, and we ended up P7.
"The car doesn’t feel too bad after the day it had. I think we have a little bit of tuning to do, but I think it would’ve been a different story if we could’ve jumped Reynolds in the pits.
"Overall, it wasn’t a great day, but not a bad day either."
On track action at the Boost Mobile Gold Coast 500 continues on Sunday with Boost Mobile Qualifying at 10:10am local time/11:10am AEDT. Tickets for the event are on sale now.
