Aaron Cameron 39 points behind Zach Bates in Super2 standings
Cameron claimed first pole and win in last start at Bathurst
Kelly Racing driver rebounded from power steering failure in first Bathurst race
Aaron Cameron is relishing the opportunity to challenge for the 2024 Dunlop Super2 Series crown after a stellar Saturday performance at the Repco Bathurst 1000.
After competing in the last three events of the 2023 season, Cameron entered his first full season this year in a two-car Kelly Racing operation alongside Mason Kelly.
The Victorian has been a model of consistency this season, having recorded seven top five finishes in 10 races this year, with three of those being trips to the podium.
In fact Cameron's only finishes outside the top 10 have been a 12th in Race 6 at Townsville, and a lapped 15th on Friday at Bathurst after suffering a power steering failure whilst running second in the dying laps.
Had Cameron claimed second behind a dominant Brad Vaughan, a 39-point deficit to Zach Bates would instead be a 48 point advantage heading into the decider.
Despite that, the versatile 24-year-old is keen to take on some of Super2's biggest teams in a championship shootout in Adelaide.
"I'm really excited, I've got nothing to lose in terms of the title, no one thought we were going to be in the title fight," said Cameron.
"For us, it's all about going out there to send it, and see if we can overcome these two big teams in Walkinshaw Andretti United and Eggleston Motorsport.
"If we can do it with the Kelly Racing boys it would be really great."
Having impressed in a range of categories and cars such as SuperUtes, S5000, and TCR, Cameron has relished in the opportunity to learn the ropes of Supercar racing under the tutelage of Todd Kelly.
The relationship with the 2005 Bathurst winner has blossomed over the course of this year, and culminated with a record-breaking Bathurst pole and a crushing victory in the final race of the weekend at Bathurst.
It has been an impressive 2024 campaign for Cameron, who also impressed in the Supercars enduros alongside Aaron Love, however a Super2 title would be the icing on the cake in Adelaide.
"Straight from when I met Todd Kelly and the Kelly family midway through last year they've been really welcoming, and they've been working so hard with our car to get it in the window," Cameron said.
"To get the lap record [at Bathurst] a few weeks ago and a race win for them, that was really special, but to top it off with a championship potentially would be bloody amazing."
On track action for the Dunlop Series begins on Thursday at the VAILO Adelaide 500 with two practice sessions. Tickets for the event are on sale now.
