Test day doesn’t bear immediate fruit for points leaders on mixed first day in Tasmania

A recent test day didn’t bear immediate fruit in Friday practice for Triple Eight in Tasmania, with Broc Feeney admitting the points leaders "still have got a bit to find" at Symmons Plains.

Chevrolets claimed the first nine positions in the first session of the weekend, but it was the two Triple Eight drivers that brought up the back of the queue.

Feeney was eighth, just 0.002s ahead of teammate and championship leader Will Brown, with Team 18’s David Reynolds fastest of all.

Brown led the times midway through the session, but ended up ninth as drivers bolted on tyres at the end of the 60-minute hit out.

However, the points leader is confident his team is in the mix, suggesting he left time on the table during his final run.

“We were trending really well at the start of practice and had really good pace sitting in P1 when we put our tyres on at the end, but we didn't get as big of a gain and ended up in ninth,” Brown said.

"I didn't do the best lap, I think that our car’s better than that, we could be a top three car.

"I think it shows because our customer cars are up the front. So, it shows we've got a good base and that's a great part of having those customer teams.

"But personally, I've got to do a better job tomorrow. Overall, though, I think we're in a good space. I am enjoying being back in Tasmania. It's not too cold today but enjoying it. It's always a bit of fun, the layout's always awesome.

"You can't make a mistake here because instead of being second or third, you end up ninth. So, you’ve got to try and do a really tidy lap and it's going to be interesting to see if it rains tomorrow."

It was a different story for Feeney, who after running 18th in the first half of the session, improved with new tyres and ended up eighth. The 21-year-old, however, believes there is still work to do to be firmly in the hunt.

“I was probably a little bit off the pace for the first half of the session, but we were a bit more competitive at the end when we put different tyres on,” Feeney said.

"We’ve got a bit to look through tonight though. We're probably not super comfortable with where we are at the moment and we still have got a bit to find, but we'll see.

"It’s hard to definitively summarise that session, but I think after a decent data review tonight we can hit the ground running before qualifying and the race tomorrow.”

Brown leads Ford rival Chaz Mostert, who was 14th on Friday, with Feeney 153 points behind in third.

Supercars action will resume on Saturday with Practice 2 at 11:05am AEST, followed by Boost Mobile Qualifying at 1:00pm, and Race 17 at 4:10pm.Share this pageShare this page
