Will Brown is hoping "a few more tools for our toolbox” found at a recent test day can help the championship leader turn the tides on Chaz Mostert.

Triple Eight star Brown has led the championship since March’s Grand Prix, but Ford rival Mostert has out-scored the Triple Eight driver by 174 points in the last two rounds.

After Darwin, the margin between the two was 279 points; heading to this weekend’s Tasmania round, Mostert is now just 105 points down.

Such is Mostert's form, that fans have backed him to win it all, with the Walkinshaw Andretti United star topping a recent Supercars.com poll.

After two off-beat rounds, Triple Eight turned out for a test at Queensland Raceway following Sydney, with team boss Jamie Whincup hailing a strong day for the championship leaders.

Brown has reason to fell bullish heading to Tasmania, given Triple Eight has won 26 of the last 39 races at Symmons Plains Raceway, while he won two races of his own last year with Erebus Motorsport.

The championship leader before the enduros also has a strong record in closing out the title, making Tasmania all-important for Brown to retain the orange numbers.

“Tasmania has been good to me,” Brown said.

“Last year I won two of the races there, so that was fantastic and hopefully we can replicate that this year.

"It was good to have a test day after Sydney and definitely gave us a few more tools for our toolbox, hopefully, we can take them to Tasmania and beat Chaz.”

Brown enjoys Symmons Plains, where he qualified in the top 10 for all three races on his first main game visit to the track in 2021.

The Queenslander, who is determined to end his eight-race winless streak, has highlighted the importance of qualifying, given the tight margins around the 2.4km circuit.

“I always find the track good fun,” Brown said.

“It’s a small track but also quite technical – so you have to put your best foot forward just because of how tight qualifying times around there are.”

Track action at the NED Whisky Tasmania SuperSprint begins on Friday.
