Five of the best Townsville liveries

Townsville is more than just a place for Supercars teams and fans to go racing and enjoy the weather.

Teams have been using the trip up north to mark milestone events or celebrate special occasions on track since its inception in 2009.

We've gone through the archive at Supercars.com and compiled five of the best special liveries to race around the Reid Park circuit.

Triple Eight, 2011

Triple Eight celebrated the military presence in Townsville by running twin camouflage Commodores in 2011.

The livery was conceived in partnership with defence force charity GEKCO and spawned success with Jamie Whincup taking the stealthy car to victory on Sunday.

Kelly Racing. 2012

When Greg Murphy missed a number of races in 2012 due to a back injury, Kelly Racing went all out sourcing a replacement.

Formula 1 World Champion of 1997 Jacques Villeneuve was drafted into the seat, with the Canadian running a livery mimicking his own rainbow helmet design.

It didn't bring much luck to the driver, with Villeneuve retiring from Saturday's race and finishing 24th on Sunday. 

Holden Racing Team, 2013

This one makes the list for bravery.

In the middle of the 2013 State of Origin battle, the Holden Racing Team gave West Australian Garth Tander a maroon racer and New South Welshman James Courtney the blue of his home state.

Sure, like Queensland, Tander won, but JC wore his colours with pride in the heart of cane toad territory. That's as bold as it gets.

With the HRT celebrating 25 years in 2015, the squad paid tribute to Peter Brock at Townsville, running the look from his final year with the team in 1997.

Tander even had his number modified to '#02' for the race weekend, but it was Courtney's #22 that came away with the best result, finishing on the podium on the Sunday.

Nissan Motorsport, 2016

Michael Caruso's is Supercars' resident football fan, but even he must have felt a little strange driving this look for Nissan.

The noted Sydney FC supporter jumped in the sky blue of Melbourne City, Nissan's associated club, for the 2016 Townsville races.

While he didn't win that weekend for the Melbourne outfit, Caruso's favoured Sydney team did go on to take out the 2016/17 A-League season.
