Across 12 races in this year's Dunlop Series, several drivers stood out with impressive race performances throughout the season.
Six drivers claimed race victories throughout 2024, whilst a further four wrapped up podium finishes without climbing onto the top step of the podium.
With several drivers appearing towards the top of the order in the Dunlop Series, who were the best race performers based on average finish?
To calculate the average finishing position of each driver for the season, only classified finishes are considered, removing any DNF's or non-classifications.
Supercars.com takes a look at the drivers with the best average finishes in the 2024 Dunlop Super2 Series.
Honourable mentions
A solid rookie season for South Australian Max Vidau saw him claim three podium finishes and the seventh-best average finish in the field of 7.36, with his sole DNF coming in the penultimate race of the year in Adelaide. Just missing out on the top five was Brad Vaughan, who claimed his first Super2 race win at Sandown and a further two podiums on his way to an average finish of 6.90. However, two DNF's cruelled his chances at contending for the title, even if he did enter the final round in Adelaide as a mathematical championship challenger.
5) Cooper Murray: 5.75
An average finish of 5.75 further highlights just what could've been for the Melburnian in 2024. When the #88 Eggleston Motorsport Commodore finished, it usually finished right at the pointy end, with two second place finishes for the season, however, three DNFs and a disqualification from the first five races (including a double DNF at the season opener in Bathurst) cruelled any title hopes. Counting all results, Murray's average finish plummets to 13.25, only the 19th-best average finish in the field when all results are counted. Murray's shortened Dunlop Series campaign finished after Sandown, though he made the most of his Triple Eight wildcard opportunity to be handed a full-time main game promotion with Erebus Motorsport next year.
4) Aaron Cameron: 5.42 (2 race wins)
The first of the title contenders to appear on this list, Aaron Cameron's first full Dunlop Series campaign was a standout season that saw him win the prestigious Mike Kable Young Gun Award at the Supercars Gala Awards. The first half of Cameron's season was built on consistency, finishing outside the top ten only once in the first eight races of the season. In the final four races of the season at Bathurst and Adelaide, a more aggressive Cameron put in a string of stunning performances, and could've easily claimed four podiums on the bounce to end the season. Regardless of poor luck in the first Bathurst race and the finale in Adelaide, Cameron claimed superb wins in the other two races to fall just 66 points short of bringing championship success to Kelly Racing. Cameron is also one of only two drivers on this list to have finished all 12 races this season.
3) Zach Bates: 5.25 (2 race wins, 3 round wins)
The 2024 champion stepped up to fill the void left by former teammate Ryan Wood, and turned his season around in the second half the season after a shaky start to the season by his own admission. After a costly collision with Cooper Murray at the Bathurst 500, and becoming an innocent victim in a lap one pile-up in Townsville, Bates didn't finish outside the top five in the final seven races of the season. Indeed, those two slip-ups were the only times the 20-year-old finished outside the top five all season long, with an eventual championship a just reward for an outstanding season. Race wins at Perth and a championship-clinching win in the Adelaide finale were highlights, as were round wins at Perth, Sandown, and Adelaide, which ironically were also the three rounds won by Wood last year. Bates was also the only driver to win multiple rounds this year, and also finished all 12 races in the season.
2) Kai Allen: 4.33 (4 race wins, 1 round win)
After the reigning champion claimed three wins out of the first three races of the season, it appeared to be a near-certainty that history would be created by the 19-year-old. However, a mid-season qualifying slump proved to be a decisive factor for Kai Allen's ultimately unsuccessful title defence, which ultimately brought on his disastrous Bathurst 1000 weekend. A 14th and a DNF were a hammer blow that saw a comfortable lead wiped out in one weekend, before another mistake on Saturday in Adelaide all but ended his title challenge. Despite that, it was still an ultra successful campaign for the Coca-Cola Commodore, with more race wins than any other driver, and the best average finish of any driver to have contested every round of the 2024 Dunlop Super2 Series.
1) Jack Perkins: 2.75 (2 race wins, 1 round win)
After a hot-and-cold 2023 season with rookie Aaron Love, Blanchard Racing Team returned to Super2 for a two-round cameo at Townsville and Sandown with Jack Perkins at the helm. Whilst logging valuable miles ahead of an enduro campaign with James Courtney, the son of six-time Bathurst winner Larry Perkins proved to be a formidable force in his four starts. Perkins claimed two race wins, a further podium, and the Townsville round win to finish his four race stint with an average finish of 2.75. The 2019 Bathurst 1000 podium finisher also proved to do his best work on Saturdays, claiming both of his race wins this season from pole position in dominant fashion.
