Ryan Wood penalised over impeding Mark Winterbottom
Wood hit with three-place grid penalty for Perth finale
Winterbottom to start 23rd after impeding incident
Mark Winterbottom was left frustrated over duel impeding incidents that saw Ryan Wood hit with a grid penalty for the Perth finale.
Winterbottom qualified 23rd for Sunday’s 55-lap race, Race 10, after being baulked by Wood late in the first part of Boost Mobile Qualifying.
Wood jumped from 24th to fourth before dropping his #2 Mobil 1 Truck Assist Ford off the track at Turn 1, and rejoined ahead of Winterbottom.
While Wood managed to secure passage into Q2 and, later, Q3, Winterbottom was unable to improve, and will start Sunday's race from the 12th and last row of the grid.
Will Davison, meanwhile, was also investigated over impeding Winterbottom, with the #17 Shell V-Power Ford driver cleared. Wood wasn's so lucky, being slapped with a three-place grid drop for the race.
Before the penalty was announced, Winterbottom expressed his frustration, saying on the broadcast: “Just two blokes… one dropping out of the pits slow and one dropping back in the track.
“That's just ruined my lap. What do you do? Hopefully he gets done for that, but that's just stupid.
“You know, you're on a lap but he's trying to come back on. So, just yeah, ruined my lap.
When asked if he had the speed to progress, Winterbottom replied: "Yeah, absolutely, like, you're on new tyres, I would have got in for sure.
“So, ruins my run, but, anyway, what do you do?"
Wood eventually qualified fourth, but will start from seventh behind Thomas Randle, Brodie Kostecki and Davison.
The event will conclude with the second 55-lap race of the weekend, Race 10, which will commence at 3:45pm AWST/5:45pm AEST. International viewers can follow all the Bosch Power Tools Perth SuperSprint action on Superview.
