Camaro Gen3-spec engine confirmed, testing timeline revised

The Gen3 specification Chevrolet Camaro, slated for a 2022 debut, is set to carry a 5.7-litre pushrod engine.

The widely-anticipated Gen3 era is set to roll out midway through next season.

The Ford Mustang will house a 5.4-litre engine, with the incoming Camaro to run the 5.7-litre option.

Under the current regulations, both Ford and Holden cars are powered by 5.0-litre engines.

KRE Race Engines will develop the GM power plant, while Mostech Race Engines has been tasked with the Ford engines.

“It’s going to be a 5.7[-litre engine],” Supercars Head of Motorsport Adrian Burgess told select media.

"Some of that stuff is still in their hands and I don’t think it’s right for me to outline all the technical details of that engine while they’re still working through their options.

"So when they have got something locked down and they present it to Supercars, then we will probably be able to give you a bit more detail around it.

"But it’s not for us to be able to dictate to them in its entirety what the engine spec is.

"We’re working with them and we’re obviously consulting with both the builders continuously, but at the moment I can’t really outline what they want to put forward; that’s their decision, not ours."

Burgess also confirmed Supercars had a "constructive meeting" with its OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers) following last month’s Merlin Darwin Triple Crown.

It was also confirmed that testing of the Triple Eight Race Engineering-built Camaro and Pace Innovations-built Mustang is set to take place in October.

As it stands, both testing teams have a chassis built.

"We’re hopeful that we’ll be on-track in October,” Burgess said.

"We’re hopeful that it will be at an event… this is a little bit of a fluid situation and we're relying on American and European manufacturers for some of the components.

"Equally, the race teams are away. We’ve just asked them to do a doubleheader so actual work in putting the prototypes together has probably slowed down a little bit this week while we’re all away.

"The two cars are coming together fairly well but we’ve still got lots of bodywork and things which are in production.”

The 2022 Sydney SuperNight remains the earmarked target for the Gen3 rollout.

The 2021 Repco Supercars Championship will continue on Saturday at the NTI Townsville 500.
