Matt Campbell now a two-time Bathurst 12 Hour winner
Campbell won Sunday's race with Manthey EMA Porsche
#912 Porsche dominated through rainy conditions
Risk management was key to Matt Campbell’s second Bathurst 12 Hour victory on Sunday, helping the Aussie become just the seventh multiple winner in the GT3 era.
The Queenslander added to his 2019 triumph with a dominant win on Sunday with Manthey EMA Porsche, alongside Laurens Vanthoor and Bathurst rookie Ayhancan Guven.
The second half of the race was lashed by rain, but the #912 Porsche emerged as the car to beat despite Manthey EMA being penalised.
The win broke SunEnergy1 Racing’s two-year win streak in the race, with Jules Gounon’s record three-straight run.
"That feels awesome," Campbell said.
"Hats off to everyone at Manthey EMA, we were always running at the front, but it wasn't easy with the mixed conditions. To Larry and Ayhancan, they did a fantastic job. We kept it off the walls... phenomenal. Second win, it's unreal.
"It was a little bit of risk management as well, obviously there was quite a lot of water still offline in places, just making sure I don't do any mistakes and really manage the gap as well.
"The team was keeping me up to date, and we got there in the end.”
Campbell is now a multiple winner of the race, joining Gounon, Christopher Mies, Darryl O'Young, Craig Lowndes, Kenny Habul and Luca Stolz as multiple GT3-era winners.
John Bowe won the race three times, but only once in the GT3 era, in 2014.
Garry Waldon (1992, 1993), Rod Salmon (2008, 2009), Damien White 2008, 2009), Garry Holt (2007, 2010) and Paul Morris (2007, 2010) were all multiple winners in the production car era.
As rain fell around the Mountain, both Campbell and Guven pushed out to big leads — something Campbell said was crucial en route to victory: “The team did a fantastic job in the pit stop when the rain started to come down.
“That really turned our race back around after a little bit of a down moment in the hour before. When it first started to come down I think I was the guinea pig on the Safety Car restart and everything like that.
“I think that was really beneficial to us because we had clean air, we didn’t have spray and we were able to get into momentum and get a feel for the track, where everyone else behind had a lot of spray and probably couldn’t see the standing water I could.
“Being out front, leading and being able to manage traffic and the slower cars a little bit better and having clean air, that was really, really important.”
